POPLARVILLE, Miss. – LSU Eunice women's soccer used its proven formula of tough defense and the timely goal to perfection in a 2-0 victory at Pearl River on Wednesday. The Bengals (11-1-1) notched the team's 8th shutout of the season.
"Defense has been our calling card this season and tonight was not any different," LSU Eunice women's soccer head coach Ian McGimsey said. "Our back line did a great job against a pretty good offensive team and really limited their chances."
LSUE held Pearl River to just seven shots, three coming on target.
Mariah Scott (San Antonio, TX, Legacy of Educational Excellence HS) grabbed three saves to preserve another clean sheet.
The Bengals cashed in on early with their first real offensive opportunity in the 34th minute. LSU Eunice had a free kick just above the right side of the penalty box, with
Jazmin Torres (Conroe, TX, Conroe HS) playing to
Samaris Alvarado (Houston, TX, Klein Forest HS) down the alley. Alvarado fired a blistering cross to
Tilly Deacon (London, England, Barking Abbey School) who smashed in a header for a goal on the backside. It was Deacon's second goal of the season.
The defense would hold serve from there as the LSUE offense couldn't manage many clean looks against the PRCC defense.
Sherice Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica, Wolmer's HS) would deliver the punctuation mark with less than 30 seconds to go, corralling a loose ball around 30 yards from goal and lofting a high volley over the PRCC goalkeepers' head for the final tally of the game.
LSUE improved to 5-1-0 against MACJC opponents this season and will face the Conference Champion next month for the Region 23 Championship.
The Bengals have a week off before their final home stretch of the regular season. LSU Eunice hosts Cisco College on Wednesday, October 16 at 5:00PM. The game will be live streamed on Bengals All-Access.
