ELLISVILLE, Miss. – LSU Eunice had its ups and downs during a Friday twinbill at Jones College, splitting an afternoon doubleheader. The Bengals (16-2) had a six-game win streak snapped in the night cap.
The Bengals used a two-inning spurt to push past Illinois Central, 12-2, in mercy-rule fashion, followed by an 11-4 setback at Jones College.
LSU Eunice concludes its two-day stay in Mississippi with a pair of games in Vicksburg. The Bengals face East Central CC at noon followed by a 3:30PM contest against Parkland College.
Illinois Central – W, 12-2
LSU Eunice capitalized on Illinois Central miscues to capture a 12-2 mercy-rule win in six innings. The Bengals scored nine runs in two innings to push past the Cougars and break a 1-1 tie.
Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) scored the first run of the game with a RBI single in the first inning, followed by a solo home run by ICC in its next at bat. The Bengals would strike for four runs in the fourth off just two hits, scoring runs on a
Nick Webre (Youngsville, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) single, a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch and passed ball to make it 5-1 LSUE.
The Bengals kept rolling an inning later as Webre delivered a back breaking three-run home run to push LSUE's lead to 10-1. LSUE would use nine walks, four wild pitches and two hit by pitch to help fill up the scoreboard.
Webre would pace the LSUE offense with five RBIs off two hits and two runs scored.
Tyler Booth (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) (W, 4-1) collected the complete game, tossing six innings while giving up two runs off three hits and two walks. Booth struck out eight batters in the game.
Jones College – L, 11-4
Missed opportunities and mistakes spelled doom for LSUE as Jones College delivered an 11-4 setback to close out Friday's doubleheader. LSUE would leave nine runners on base including seven in scoring position.
The Bengals were the first on the board as
Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) delivered a two-out bases loaded two-RBI single. Bellina was caught trying to advance to second to end the LSUE threat.
Jones would proceed to score five unanswered runs over the next five innings with three of those runners reaching base on a hit by pitch. The Bobcats would also capitalize on two Bengal errors in that span.
LSUE would show some signs of life in the seventh inning as
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) blasted a towering two-run home run to straight away center. Town's second homer of the season would slice the LSUE deficit to 6-4.
The Bobcats would respond with authority, plating five runs off three hits and two walks to push ahead for the final margin, 11-4. Jones was led by Brandon Hale's two-hit, two RBI and three runs scored performance.
Andrew Sheridan (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) (L, 4-1) was tagged with his first loss at LSU Eunice. Sheridan gave up six runs, four earned, off six hits and one walk in five full innings.
Jerry Couch (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) would give up five earned runs in two innings of relief while
Jacob Spell (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) pitched the eighth inning.
