Home Runs Power LSUE To Shawnee Sweep

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice belted five home runs in Wednesday's doubleheader with Shawnee to take a pair of games at Lady Bengal Field.  It was the Bengals' (25-5) first home games since February 2.

LSUE powered past the Saints in the opener, 17-0, before using early offense to score a 6-0 victory in the second game.

The Bengals and Shawnee will play another doubleheader in Eunice starting at 12:00PM.  Both games can be streamed line on Bengals All-Access.

Game 1 vs. Shawnee CC – W, 17-0
Lele Martinez (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) hit her first two home runs of the season to help pace the Bengals in a 17-0 five inning run-rule victory.  The Bengals hit four home runs in the game.

LSUE struck for three runs in the opening stanza headlined by Hannah Smith's (Lafayette, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) two-run double.  The Bengals would break open the game with a seven-run third inning highlighted by Martinez's three-run blast.  The freshman drove in a season's best five RBIs in the contest while going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs.

Martinez would hit her second home run in the fourth while Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) closed the scoring with a two-run home run later in the frame.  Kelci Bodin (New Iberia, LA, Loreauville HS) hit the first long ball of the day for LSUE with a solo homer in the second.

Monson joined Martinez with a three-hit game to lead the 15-hit attack.

Heather Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) (W, 10-2) pitched three perfect innings to pick up the win, striking out six batters.  Heidi Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) threw two innings of one-hit relief.

Game 2 vs. Shawnee CC – W, 6-0
The Bengals scored all their runs in the first two innings as LSUE cruised to a 6-0 win in the final game of the doubleheader.

Madison Monson (Walker, LA, Walker HS) sparked the early onslaught with a towering solo home run to straight away center.  Kelci Bodin would followed later in the frame with a RBI double.

Monson drove in another with a sacrifice ground out to push the Bengal advantage to 3-0 in the second inning.  After a Mallory Little sacrifice, Abbey Higginbotham (Church Point, LA, Notre Dame HS) would cap off the scoring with a RBI double and run scored on a Shawnee fielding error.

Jeanne Trahan (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) after pitching four innings of two-hit relief to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Jensen Howell (Alexandria, LA, Holy Savior Menard HS) also scattered two hits in three innings of work while striking out three batters.
