EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice belted five home runs in Wednesday's doubleheader with Shawnee to take a pair of games at Lady Bengal Field. It was the Bengals' (25-5) first home games since February 2.
LSUE powered past the Saints in the opener, 17-0, before using early offense to score a 6-0 victory in the second game.
The Bengals and Shawnee will play another doubleheader in Eunice starting at 12:00PM. Both games can be streamed line on Bengals All-Access.
Game 1 vs. Shawnee CC – W, 17-0
Lele Martinez (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) hit her first two home runs of the season to help pace the Bengals in a 17-0 five inning run-rule victory. The Bengals hit four home runs in the game.
LSUE struck for three runs in the opening stanza headlined by
Hannah Smith's (Lafayette, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) two-run double. The Bengals would break open the game with a seven-run third inning highlighted by Martinez's three-run blast. The freshman drove in a season's best five RBIs in the contest while going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs.
Martinez would hit her second home run in the fourth while
Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) closed the scoring with a two-run home run later in the frame.
Kelci Bodin (New Iberia, LA, Loreauville HS) hit the first long ball of the day for LSUE with a solo homer in the second.
Monson joined Martinez with a three-hit game to lead the 15-hit attack.
Heather Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) (W, 10-2) pitched three perfect innings to pick up the win, striking out six batters.
Heidi Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) threw two innings of one-hit relief.
Game 2 vs. Shawnee CC – W, 6-0
The Bengals scored all their runs in the first two innings as LSUE cruised to a 6-0 win in the final game of the doubleheader.
Madison Monson (Walker, LA, Walker HS) sparked the early onslaught with a towering solo home run to straight away center. Kelci Bodin would followed later in the frame with a RBI double.
Monson drove in another with a sacrifice ground out to push the Bengal advantage to 3-0 in the second inning. After a Mallory Little sacrifice,
Abbey Higginbotham (Church Point, LA, Notre Dame HS) would cap off the scoring with a RBI double and run scored on a Shawnee fielding error.
Jeanne Trahan (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) after pitching four innings of two-hit relief to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Jensen Howell (Alexandria, LA, Holy Savior Menard HS) also scattered two hits in three innings of work while striking out three batters.
