EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice took care of business with a Thursday doubleheader sweep of Shawnee CC at Lady Bengal Field. The Bengals (27-5) won all four games played against the Saints over the last two days by a margin of 44-3.
The Bengals netted a pair of mercy-rule wins taking down Shawnee 9-1 and 12-2. LSUE has 11 run-rule victories on the season.
LSUE will continue its season-long 12-game homestand on Friday, March 15 as Coastal Alabama-South comes to town. The scheduled doubleheader will begin at 1:00PM from Lady Bengal Field. Both games can be seen live on Bengals All-Access.
Game 1 vs. Shawnee CC– W, 9-1
The power hitting duo of
Madison Monson (Walker, LA, Walker HS) and
Hannah Smith (Lafayette, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) helped LSUE pull away from Shawnee CC 9-1 to secure a mercy-rule victory in five innings. The duo drove in five RBIs and scored four runs on the game.
Monson would pace the Bengals early with a sacrifice ground out in the first inning, followed by a towering two-run home run in the third to give LSUE a 3-0 advantage.
Smith would score on a
Abbey Higginbotham (Church Point, LA, Notre Dame HS) double in the third, drive in a pair on a RBI triple in the fourth and secure the mercy-rule clinching run on a wild pitch later in the frame.
Sara Tate (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS) was the other Bengal to do damage at the plate, bringing in
Kelci Bodin (New Iberia, LA, Loreauville HS) in the fourth inning on a triple and scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. LSUE would use a five-run fourth to force the shortened game.
Lauren Parson (DeRidder, LA, DeRidder HS) (4-1) pitched four innings to grab the win, scattering one earned run off four hits and three walks. The freshman also sat down four batters.
Heidi Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) pitched one inning of relief.
Game 2 vs. Shawnee CC– W, 12-2
The Bengals rallied from an early-two run deficit to score 12 unanswered runs in a 12- win to close out a four-game set against Shawnee. The Bengals offense would come alive for 14 hits with six as extra-base hits.
Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) navigated rocky waters early as the Saints strung together three straight hits and a sacrifice ground out to take a 2-0 lead. Ortego would settle down to throw two hitless frames to pick up her first win at LSUE.
Jeanne Trahan (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) provided two hitless innings of relief.
After
Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) put LSUE on the board in the first with a RBI double,
Lele Martinez (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) would give the Bengals the lead for good with a two-run home run to start the second inning. Martinez hit three home runs against Shawnee.
Little paced the Bengals offense with a 2-for-3 outing, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Martinez, Sara Tate and Hannah Smith drove in multiple runs on the game.
The Bengals pieced together a six-run second inning, followed by a five-run third inning.
