EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice pounded 15 runs in the first three innings and never looked back, grabbing a 20-1 run-rule victory over Centenary College JV on Tuesday at Bengal Stadium. The 20 runs are a season high for the Bengals (24-4), currently with the second most runs (268) in NJCAA Division II.
LSUE broke the game open with seven runs in the first inning including home runs from
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS),
Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) and
Brooks Rushworth (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS). Town opened the game with a solo shot, followed by a grand slam from Bellina and a two-run long ball by Rushworth.
Bellina finished the game with a team-high five RBIs to go with three runs scored.
After two runs in the second inning, LSUE broke through for six more runs in the third inning including
Jack Merrifield's (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) three-run home run to left field. It was the freshman's first home run at LSU Eunice.
Ten different players recorded a hit in the game, led by
Tristan Welch's (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) three-hit performance. Nine of those players also drove in a run including multi-RBI games from Town, Bellina, Merrifield and Rushworth.
The offensive onslaught was more than enough for
Kade Gonsoulin (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) (3-1) to pick up his third win of the season. Gonsoulin tossed four innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout.
Jacob Spell (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS),
Jerry Couch (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) and
Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) all pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
LSUE will continue its five-game homestand Friday with a doubleheader against Coastal Bend College. The 3:00PM twinbill can be seen live on Bengals All-Access.
