EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice used early offensive and another dominant showing on the mound to secure a Friday sweep of Coastal Bend College at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (26-4) pushed its current win streak to eight games.
The Bengals used a five-run first inning to spark a Game One 9-0 victory, followed by another offensive explosion in a 13-3 decision. Jack Merrifield paced the Bengal bats with four hits and four RBIs in the two games.
LSUE closes out its series against Coastal Bend with a Saturday game set for 12:00PM. Fans can watch the game on-line on Bengals All-Access and on the Bayou Sports Network.
Game 1 vs. Coastal Bend College – W, 9-0
LSUE used a five-run opening frame to spark a 9-0 victory of Coastal Bend. The shutout was the team's fifth of the season, the most in NJCAA Division II.
Andrew Sheridan was responsible for holding the Cougars in check, recording his third complete game shutout of the season. Sheridan (6-1) allowed just three hits and one walk in seven innings of work. The sophomore struck out five batters and sat down the Cougars in order three times.
The Bengals gave all the offense Sheridan would need in the first inning with a five-run outburst. LSUE collected five consecutive one-out hits capped off by Jack Merrifield's 3-run home run. Jarrett McDonald and Nick Bellina also drove in runs during the inning.
LSUE would push across three more runs in the fourth as Javier Vaz, River Town and McDonald would drive in runs on consecutive at-bats. Vaz would plate the final run of the day in the sixth inning, scoring on a wild pitch.
Town, McDonald and Tristan Welch all had multi-hit games in the Bengals' 10-hit attack.
Game 2 vs. Coastal Bend College – W, 13-3
The Bengals offense continued their recent hot streak in a runaway 13-3 victory to close out the Friday doubleheader with Coastal Bend. LSUE scored double figures for the 18th time this season, currently averaging 9.9 runs per game.
Four different Bengals notched multi-RBI games as LSUE raced out to an early 5-0 lead. River Town started the scoring with a run off a wild pitch, followed by a big two-run double by Reed Babin. Evan Keller and Slate Fuller also drove in runs in the early offensive spurt.
After Coastal Bend trimmed the game to 5-2, LSUE added three more in the middle innings with a fifth inning Jack Merrifield RBI double, a Keller sacrifice ground out and wild pitch to score Town.
Town would put the game away for good with a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Fuller would secure an eighth inning run-rule with a RBI single to score Hunter Tabb.
Jacob Spell gave a solid five innings in his first career start at LSUE. Spell (1-0) tossed five innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters. Gage Trahan and Jerry Couch pitched in relief.
