EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice capped off an impressive undefeated week with an emphatic 13-0 run-rule victory over Coastal Bend College on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (27-4) won all six games this week by a margin of 72-6.
Saturday's shut-out was the Bengals sixth of the season.
LSUE came out of the gates firing, using a pair of four-run frames in the first three innings. Jack Merrifield was a catalyst in both outbursts, singling home a run in the second on a Coastal Bend error, followed by a RBI triple in the third inning. Merrifield finished a double shy of the cycle after blasting a solo home run in the sixth inning.
The Bengals were able to manufacture runs off Cougar miscues with four runs in the game off either an error or walk.
The well balanced LSUE offense had seven different players record a base hit with eight players also driving in runs. Merrifield's three-hit game led the way with Evan Keller and Merrifield also recording multi-RBI games.
LSUE secured the mercy-rule win with a three-run fifth off two bases loaded walks and Tristan Welch's sacrifice fly helped push the Bengal lead to 11-0.
Merrifield's solo home run and a Bren Faulk RBI single closed the scoring in the sixth.
Dane Dixon continued his stellar start to the season with five innings of four hit shutout ball to improve to 7-0 on the season. Dixon allowed three walks and struck out four batters. Tod Gauthe and Landon Clifton each pitched an inning of relief.
LSUE will continue its five-game homestand with a Monday showdown against Panola College at 3:00PM. The two nationally ranked teams can be seen live on Bengals All-Access.
