Bengals, Dixon Stay Hot In Road Win At Wharton

WHARTON, Texas – LSU Eunice used a balanced offense and another Dane Dixon (Walker, LA, Walker HS) jewel to secure a 7-2 road win at Wharton County JC on Monday.  The Bengals (30-4) victory kicked off a five-game road trip throughout Texas.

Dixon delivered his fifth quality start of the season, giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk in six innings of work.  The redshirt sophomore captain improved to 8-0 on the season after striking out three batters.

After giving up an unearned run in the opening frame, Dixon sat down the Pioneers in order twice and limited Wharton County to only three base runners reaching scoring position.

LSUE took the lead for good in the second inning with a three-run frame.  Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS) drove in Slate Fuller (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) on a sacrifice fly, and River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) blasted a two-run home run.  Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) would score twice off wild pitches to make it a 5-2 game in the fifth inning.

Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) provided the final blow with a two-run single in the sixth inning.  Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) served as a catalyst for the LSUE offense, producing a game-high three hits and scoring once.

In addition to Dixon's dominance, LSUE bridged Tod Gauthe' (Brusly, LA, Brusly HS), Tyler Booth (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS), Gage Trahan (Maurice, LA, Vermilion Catholic HS) and Landon Clifton (Napoleonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) to piece together the final three innings.

The Bengals Lone Star State swing continues this weekend with a three-game set at Tyler JC.  The two perennial powers begin their series Saturday, April 6 at 6:00PM. The game can be heard on the Bayou Sports Network.
