Top Five Softball Showdown Ends In Split

EUNICE, La – LSU Eunice and Tyler JC showed why the two are perennial NJCAA powers with a Monday doubleheader split at Lady Bengal Field.  The two teams are ranked top five in their respective NJCAA division.

Both teams saw their long win streaks come to an end as the Bengals (12 games) and third-ranked Apaches (28 games) upended each other.  No. 2 LSUE would fall 5-3 in Game One, followed by a come-from-behind 4-3 victory to close out the twinbill.

LSUE will hit the road on Wednesday for the first of four scheduled doubleheaders with Baton Rouge CC over the next month.  The action from Oak Villa Sports Complex is scheduled to begin at 3:00PM.

Game 1 vs. Tyler JC – L, 3-5
A late surge was not enough as LSUE fell 5-3 in the opener of its doubleheader with Tyler JC.  The Apaches plated two runs in the seventh inning after LSUE tied the game an inning earlier.

TJC used back-to-back hits in the final frame to set up two runners in scoring position, bringing them home on a single and sacrifice.  The Bengals were able to put the game tying run at the plate but could not rally for a second time.

LSUE had tied up the game in the sixth after a lineup change sparked the Bengals.  Hannah Carpenter (Friendswood, TX, Friendswood HS) plated a pair with a double to left field, followed by Morgan Harlow's (Lake Charles, LA, Westlake HS) RBI single to tie it up 3-3.  The Bengals managed four of their seven hits in the game during the sixth.

The Bengals struggled in the first five innings, managing two hits off of TJC starter Dakota Stotyn.

Jensen Howell (Alexandria, LA, Holy Savior Menard HS) received a tough luck loss after tossing a complete game, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and two walks.  Howell (L, 14-3) struck out seven batters after holding the Apaches in check for the majority of the game after giving up two early first inning runs.

Game 2 vs. Tyler JC – W, 4-3
A four-run inning helps LSUE overcome an early hole as the Bengals escaped with a 4-3 win over Tyler JC.

LSUE used two of its three hits in the game plus two errors to plate the four runs in the fifth inning.  The rally started with Madison Monson (Walker, LA, Walker HS) belting a one-out triple, followed by Lele Martinez (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) getting hit by a pitch.  Martinez would steal second base and an errant throw on the pick-off attempt would allow Monson to come in and score.

The Bengals would load the bases after a walk and another hit by pitch.  Fielder's choices by Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) and Lauren Parson (DeRidder, LA, DeRidder HS) would tie the game 3-3, followed by Hannah Smith's (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) game winning RBI single to score Sara Tate (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS).

Heather Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) would allow just one hit in the final two innings to pick up the complete game win.  Zumo (W, 14-2) held a prolific Tyler offense to just three runs off three hits and two walks.  The sophomore also struck out three batters.

Audrey Pickett was saddled with the loss for TJC after coming in relief during LSUE's big inning.
