ELLISVILLE, Ms. – No. 15 LSU Eunice used early offense and some critical late stops to win a 3-2 thriller at Jones College on Tuesday at Bobcat Soccer Field. LSUE (6-0-1) avenged a Region 23 Championship game loss to the Bobcats last season.
"Jones has been the measuring stick in Region 23 for a few years now, so it's great for us to leave with a victory," LSU Eunice women's head coach Ian McGimsey said. "Our ladies are really starting to elevate their play and it's showing on the scoreboard."
Samaris Alvarado (Houston, TX, Klein Forest HS) continued her stellar play of late, scoring in her fourth consecutive match. The freshman linked up with
Brianna Roberts (Conroe, TX, Oak Ridge HS) on a through ball and finished with a low screamer for a 10th minute goal. Alvarado's goal was the only one of the first half, as both teams totaled 10 shots.
The Bengals roared out of the locker room, scoring a pair of goals just minutes apart.
Tilly Deacon (London, England, Barking Abbey School) netted her first LSUE goal on a 48th minute
Chloe Dean (Doncaster, England) corner kick.
Abbie Watson (Durham, England, Durham-Johnston Comprehensive School) would push the LSUE to 3-0 in the 50th minute as she corralled a
Jazmin Torres (Conroe, TX, Conroe HS) assist and finished with her left foot. It was the co-captain's first goal of the season.
Jones would not go down with a fight, scoring twice late to push the game to 3-2 with eight minutes to play. LSUE would make a few game saving stops late, including a
Mariah Scott (San Antonio, TX, Legacy of Educational Excellence HS) save in the 89th minute.
Scott finished with five saves off seven shots on goal from Jones. The Bobcats outshot LSUE, 16-13, while the Bengals had more on target, 9-7.
LSUE will continue its Mississippi road swing with a doubleheader against East Central CC on the campus of Meridian CC. The Bengals' stay at the MCC Rush Tournament will start at 1:00PM.
