NEW ORLEANS, La. – LSU Eunice women's basketball used a similar formula to its first two LCCAC wins with a big early run and suffocating defense to help take down Delgado, 78-57, on Wednesday at the Williamson Center. The Bengals (14-6) went unbeaten in the first leg of conference play for the third straight year and won their 22nd consecutive conference game.
The Bengals and Dolphins were locked in a tight 13-12 game midway through the first quarter before LSUE went on one of its patented big runs.
Ava Jones (Carencro, LA, Carencro HS) triggered a 20-2 spurt over an eight-minute span as she scored the first five points of the run and capped it off with a jumper with 8:44 remaining in the second quarter to give the Bengals a 33-14 edge.
Jones' seven points were part of a game-high 24 points effort. LSUE would never see its lead dip below 11 points for the rest of the contest, taking a 48-26 lead into halftime.
The LSUE defense held Delgado to just 19-for-52 shooting from the floor (36.5%), while forcing 22 turnovers off 15 steals.
Claralee Richard (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) enjoyed one of her best all-around games with LSUE, grabbing her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a stat-sheet stuffing three assists, three steals and three blocks.
Alona Washington (Gonzales, LA, Ascension Christian HS) was the other Bengal to record a double-digit point effort, tallying 10 points in addition to nine rebounds and six assists.
All nine players for LSUE would contribute with at least two points and grab one rebound. The Bengals team game was also on display with 20 of 28 field goals being assisted.
LSUE will close out its three-game conference road swing on Saturday with a return trip to Baton Rouge CC. The Bengals defeated BRCC, 83-57, to open up LCCAC play last week.
