EUNICE, La. – No. 1 LSU Eunice baseball showed its resolve on Sunday by overcoming an eight-run deficit to defeat Coastal Alabama-South, 13-11, and secure another weekend sweep at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (9-0) scored 13 unanswered runs in a three-inning span to take down the SunChiefs.
If something could go wrong in the first inning, it did for the Bengals. Coastal Alabama scored eight runs off seven hits and two errors with five runs coming with two outs. LSUE would have opportunities to answer early, but was held scoreless through the first three innings, leaving five runners on base including a bases loaded with no out situation in the third.
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) would spark the rally, scoring
Hunter Tabb (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) on a double to right field. LSUE would cut the deficit in half, 8-4, in the inning after plating runs on a
Brady Hebert (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) sacrifice, an error and wild pitch.
Austin Andrishok in relief in Sunday's win
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would hold Coastal Alabama at bay while the Bengals chewed into the lead. The sophomore relieved starter
Jerry Couch (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) in the first inning, tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief while issuing four hits and two walks. Andrishok also struck out six batters, a new career high.
Nathan Holmes (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Streetsville Secondary) continued to keep CACC-South off the scoreboard, shutting down a scoring opportunity in the fifth. Holmes inherited a two-on, one-out situation, inducing a strikeout and groundout to end the threat. The Canadian would go on to pick up his first win of the season after 1.2 innings of perfect relief.
Javier Vaz slides in safely for a run scored.
LSUE would creep closer with three more runs in the fifth inning and break through with the lead an inning later. It was McDonald, again, that would open up the inning with a RBI off a misplayed sacrifice fly attempt to left field. McDonald finished 3-for-4, leading the team with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Ayden Makarus (Okatoks, Alberta, Canada, Foothills Composite HS) gave LSUE the lead a batter later with a bases loaded infield single to shortstop. After
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS) walked in a run to make it 10-8,
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) added two more runs on a single to right field.
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) capped off the six-run outburst with a RBI single.
Vaz joined McDonald and Hunter Tabb to have multi-hit games in the LSUE 10-hit attack.
The Bengals would unload the bullpen as
Miles Clack (Katy, TX, Seven Lake HS),
Dawson Alexander (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS),
Dalton Burrell (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) and
Chance Stone (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) would pitched the next two innings.
Noah Beason (Lufkin, TX, Huntington HS) grabbed his first save of the year after pitching the final frame, giving up one run while striking out a pair.
LSUE returns to play Friday as the Bengals welcome Monroe College for a three-game series. The Bengals were scheduled to play Monday, February 17 against Centenary College but the game has been moved to April 28 due to weather-related field conditions in Shreveport.
