EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice used an opportunistic offensive approach to take down Paris JC, 23-6, in a mercy rule victory on Friday at Bengal Stadium. The 23 runs are the most for the Bengals (4-0) since a 35-1 win over Prairie State College on March 19, 2016.
The game also marked the fourth consecutive run-rule victory for LSUE.
Errors would prove costly for the Dragons as miscues would play critical roles in LSUE's pair of seven-run innings. After PJC took an early lead, LSUE would load the bases in the second inning after a one-out
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) pop fly was misplayed in left field.
Thomas Stevens (Crowley, LA, Notre Dame HS) would give LSUE the lead for good with a two-run single, followed by three consecutive hits and an error to push the Bengals' lead to 7-1.
LSUE would add to its tally with three runs an inning later thanks to a two-out three RBI double from
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS). The sophomore continued his red-hot start to the season with a 3-for-4 game, driving in five RBIs and scoring twice.
Paris would not go away easily as the Dragons plated five runs in the fourth to cut the LSUE lead to 10-6.
The Bengals would answer in emphatic fashion, plating another seven-run frame all with two outs.
Brady Hebert's (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) bases loaded fly ball to right center was dropped, unloading the bases and giving LSUE a 13-6 advantage. After PJC would walk in a run on another bases loaded situation,
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) would clear them again with a three-run double to up the lead to 17-6.
LSUE would add six more runs in the sixth inning, headlined by Charles Gordon's two-run single.
Nine different LSUE batters had at least a hit in the Bengals 16-hit attack, while 12 different players scored at least a run.
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS), Town and Merrifield each had multi-hit games for the Bengals, with Merrifield pacing the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 night.
Simon Miller (Canton, TX, Canton HS) picked up his second win of the season after tossing 3.1 innings, giving up six earned runs off four hits and six walks.
Caleb Seroski (Breaux Bridge, LA, Breaux Bridge HS) turned in his best performance of the early season with 2.2 innings of shutout relief, followed by
Brenton Thiels (Otis, LA, Alexandria Senior HS) three-strikeout inning to close the game.
LSUE returns to action tomorrow against Paris JC with a 1:00PM game at Bengal Stadium.
