EUNICE, La. – No. 1 LSU Eunice continued its hot start to the 2021 campaign with a 12-0 mercy-rule win over Highland CC on Sunday at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (10-0) scored double-digit runs for the seventh time already this season and secured the third shutout.
LSUE went right to work in the opening frame, scoring three runs off a
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) sacrifice fly and two-run double by
Ayden Makarus (Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, Foothills Composite HS). Jones would follow up an inning later with a two-run single to push the LSUE advantage to 5-0.
Jones joined
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) with multi-hit games for the Bengals, Quinn leading the team with three runs scored on the afternoon. LSUE would add a four-run inning in the third, highlighted by
Jack Merrifield's (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) two-run single.
LSUE added three more in the fifth to trigger the mercy-rule including a two-run sacrifice fly by
Bryce LaRocca (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS).
Dalton Burrell (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) picked up the win in his first start of the season. Burrell (1-0) pushed through a shaky first inning to strikeout seven batters while pitching four innings of two-hit shutout baseball.
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS),
Cade Hart (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS),
Jase McDonald (Denham Springs, LA, Denham Springs HS) and
Dylan Beier (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) strung together the final three innings in relief.
LSUE will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend with a trip to L.B. Wallace. A Saturday doubleheader will kick off the weekend series with a 12:00PM start time.
