EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice continued its hot start to the 2021 campaign with a pair of victories on Saturday as part of a three-way doubleheader with LSU Alexandria and National Park College.
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) and
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) carried the load for the Bengals in the doubleheader, combining for eight hits, six RBIs, six runs scored and a home run. Jones is off to a blistering start to the season, leading the team with a .579 batting average (11-for-19).
The Bengals close out the weekend with a Sunday matinee against National Park College. First pitch from Bengal Stadium is scheduled for 1:00PM.
Game 1 vs. LSU Alexandria – W, 12-5
LSU Eunice blasted a trio of home runs and got a dominant relief performance from
Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) to take a 12-5 decision over LSU Alexandria.
The Bengals found themselves in a 4-1 hole in the second inning with a pair of two-out hits from the Generals, including a RBI single from former LSUE standout Bren Faulk. Ronnie McBride followed that up with a three-run home run to give LSUA the early lead.
LSUE responded with authority by ripping off seven unanswered runs. The Bengals capitalized on LSUA miscues before
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) lifted his own three-run home run to make it 8-4 LSU Eunice in the fourth inning.
That was more than enough offense another strong out by Jake Hammond. The Bengals' top relief arm would come in for the third inning and shut down the LSUA offense. Hammond struck out eight batters over five innings while scattering one earned run on two hits and two walks to pick up his first win of the season.
The long ball theme would continue as LSUA knocked a solo home run, followed by sixth inning bombs from Peyton LeJeune and
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS). McDonald capped off his hot game with a RBI double later in the inning to give LSUE an 11-5 advantage.
Brady Hebert's (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) sacrifice fly in the eighth would end the Bengals' offensive output for the game.
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would finish out the game on the mound with two innings of one-hit shutout relief.
Game 2 vs. National Park College – W, 8-1
Peyton LeJeune's three-hit game spearheaded a balanced attack from LSUE as the Bengals scored the Saturday sweep with an 8-1 win over National Park College.
LeJeune had a role in four of the Bengals' first five runs, doubling home
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) in the first, knocking a RBI single an inning later and scoring runs in the first and fifth innings. The freshman went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to pace six-hit attack.
Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) would take it from there, throwing six shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season. The big right hander struck out five batters while giving up one hit and two walks. At one point, Lasseigne retired 11 batters in a row, giving up his first hit in the fifth inning.
Dalton Burrell (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) closed out the game with an inning of relief.
Brady Hebert was also a bright spot for LSUE, driving in runs with a second inning triple and sixth inning double.
