Bengals Drop Saturday Doubleheader To Murray State

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice saw both games with Murray State College slip through its fingers in the final innings as the Bengals were swept in a Saturday doubleheader at Bengal Stadium.

The setbacks carried historical significance as LSU Eunice (14-2) saw its program-best 35-game win streak come to a close.  The Bengals went a perfect 21-0 in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season before winning the first 14 games of the 2021 campaign.

The two losses in the day are the first doubleheader sweep at home since dropping a pair to San Jacinto College on May 2, 2009.

The Bengals gave up four runs in the seventh inning including a game winning three-run home run in a 6-4 opening loss, followed by three runs in the ninth to break a tie game in the Aggies' 10-7 nightcap.

LSUE will try to salvage a four-game series split Sunday at Bengal Stadium.  The matinee is scheduled to begin at 1:00PM.

Game 1 vs. Murray State College – L, 6-4
Cyrus Campos blasted a pinch-hit three-run home run in the final inning as the Bengals fell 6-4 in a seven inning contest against Murray State College.

The Bengals held a 4-2 lead going into the final inning after Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) sacrificed in Brady Hebert (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) in the fourth inning.  LSUE took the lead an inning earlier off Ayden Makarus's (Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, Foothills Composite HS) three-run opposite field home run.

Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) received a no decision after a solid 4.1 innings of work.  The starter gave up two earned runs off six hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.

LSUE would go down in order in the seventh inning as Murray State held on for the victory.

Game 2 vs. Murray State College – L, 10-7
LSU Eunice's tough luck continued as the Aggies plated three two-out runs in the ninth as the Bengals fell 10-7.

The Bengals were down to the final out of the ninth inning before a hit by pitch and walk set the stage for Sage Hampton and Jovanny Mijares connected on back-to-back run scoring hits to help Murray State regain the lead.  The Bengals would go down in order in the ninth inning in their rally attempt.

LSUE fought back to tie the game 7-7 in the eighth inning as a wild pitch allowed Darian Richard (Rayne, LA, Rayne HS) to score.  Three of the Bengals' runs gave by way of five Murray State errors.

Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) provided a boost early in the contest with a second inning two-run home run, followed by Scott Jones scoring on an error to tie the game 3-3.  The Aggies would push back up to a 7-4 lead before the Bengals would tie again.

Jones paced LSUE's 7-hit output with a 3-for-4 game, scoring twice.
