EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice withstood a scrappy Baton Rouge CC squad to remain unbeaten in LCCAC play with a 66-56 victory on Saturday at the HPRE Center. The Bengals (10-2, 5-0 LCCAC) finds itself with a three game lead in the conference standings nearly halfway through the schedule.
LSUE trailed or was knotted up with BRCC for the majority of the first half, using a 5-0 run late in the half to take a 25-24 advantage into the locker rooms. The Bears clawed back after intermission with six quick points to regain a five-point lead before LSUE responded with a
Brooklyn Fontenot (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS) basket and
Kendall Miller (Iota, LA, Iota HS) three pointer to tie.
After a free throw made, Fontenot's drive to the hoop would give LSUE the lead for good, part of a 14-0 run that lasted for most of the quarter as the Bengals saw their lead balloon to nine, 39-30. LSUE's lead would temporarily swell to 14 points before hovering around double digits in the fourth quarter.
Fontenot led LSUE with 16 points, the freshman's fifth straight game scoring double digits.
Alona Washington (Gonzales, LA, Ascension Christian HS) added 14 points while
Tahjea Smith (Texas City, TX, Texas City HS) produced a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bengals remain home for the rest of the week with three LCCAC contest on the docket. LSUE hosts Southern-Shreveport on Monday at 5:30PM in a makeup game from the state's winter storm last month.
