WHARTON, Tx. – A four-run fourth inning was all LSU Eunice would need as the Bengals escaped Wharton County with a 6-3 victory on Sunday at Corbett Park.
The Bengals (20-3) would make the Pioneers pay for mistakes, as LSUE would score its first run on a sacrifice bunt by
Michael Fontenot (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS). Fontenot would reach safely after one of two Wharton County errors. After
Grant Mangrum (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) grounded out to score
Cade Hart (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS),
Reed Eason (West Monroe, LA, West Monroe HS) would make the error hurt with a two-run double to make it 4-0 LSUE.
Cade Hart would manufacture another run an inning later, grounding out to score
Bryce LaRocca (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS).
That was more than enough for
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS), who would pick up his seventh win in as many starts. The freshman continued to show veteran savvy going 5.1 innings, scattering two earned runs off four hits and three walks. Vienne struck out eight batters on the night.
Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) tossed 2.2 innings of perfect relief before
Brock Barthelemy (Gonzales, LA, Dutchtown HS) would finish the game.
After seeing Wharton County sneak back to a 5-2 game, LSUE would use a wild pitch to score Reed Eason for an insurance run.
Eason led the Bengals at the plate with a pair of doubles, driving in two runs and scoring once. Bryce LaRocca and Michael Fontenot were the two other Bengals to score multi-hit games.
LSUE will close out its trip to Texas tomorrow with another game at Wharton County at 1:00PM.
