TYLER, Texas – LSU Eunice Baseball took a pair of high-stress games at Tyler JC on Sunday to notch a weekend road sweep. The three games the Bengals (33-13) won were only decided by a total of four runs.
LSU Eunice held off a late charge by TJC to take the opener 6-4, followed by a thrilling 6-5 decision in 10 innings.
Christian Gonzalez (Breaux Bridge, LA, Breaux Bridge HS) was a sparkplug for the Bengals offense, driving in a team-high four RBIs total in the doubleheader.
LSUE enters the final full week of the regular season, starting Tuesday with an afternoon game against Panola College. First pitch from Bengal Stadium is set for 3:00PM.
Game 1 vs. Tyler JC – W, 6-4
LSU Eunice jumped out to a big lead before holding on late in a 6-4 victory over Tyler JC to begin their Sunday doubleheader.
The Bengals would put together an efficient offense showing, recording at least a hit in six of the seven innings. After
Kole Myers (Jennings, LA, Jennings HS) would score in the first inning off a wild pitch, Christian Gonzalez would produce the first of his two RBIs in the second inning.
Brandon Mooney (Madisonville, LA, Mandeville HS) would be on both ends of for the LSUE offense, driving in a run in the fifth and scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Mooney joined Kole Myers and
Alexander Saunier (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette HS) with multi-hit games.
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS) improved to 10-1 on the season with five innings of work, giving up an unearned run off three hits and three walks while also striking out three batters.
TJC would cut the deficit to 6-4 in the final inning as the Apaches got their first four base runners on in the frame.
Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) would come in and get three of the four batters he faced out to pick up first save of the season.
Game 2 vs. Tyler JC – W, 6-5 (10 Innings)
Christian Gonzalez executed a sacrifice bunt in the tenth inning to deliver LSU Eunice a 6-5 win over Tyler JC to grab a weekend sweep of the Apaches.
The go-ahead run ended a back-and-forth game as LSUE erased a 3-1 deficit with a three-run fifth inning before TJC rallied late to force extra innings.
Parker Coley (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) put LSUE on the board first in the opening frame with a two-out single to bring home
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS). After a three-run fourth inning would give Tyler its only lead of the weekend, the Bengals answer with three of their own. LeJeune would provide the big hit, singling with the bases loaded and using a TJC error to clear the bases and give LSUE the lead back, 4-3.
LeJeune was the lone Bengal to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring once.
Christian Gonzalez would provide a valuable run in the eighth with a solo home run, his second of the season. Tyler would answer runs in the eighth and ninth.
Drew Lasseigne would grab the win after getting a critical strikeout to end the ninth and navigating the tenth. Lasseigne would strike out two batters in the final frame, including the final out of the game with two runners in scoring position.
