EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball clicked on all cylinders to start the 2023 regular season as the Bengals shut out North Lake College 11-0 on Friday at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (1-0) improved to 20-1 all-time in season openers under head coach Jeff Willis.
The Bengals received a solid outing on the mound from starter
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS) and
Aiden Vosburg (Jarreau, LA, Catholic-Pointe Coupee HS). The sophomore duo combined for 11 strikeouts in the abbreviated game while allowing just two baserunners to reach scoring position.
Vienne picked up the win after tossing four innings before yielding to Vosburg for the final three. Vosburg retired the final nine batters in order to end the game.
LSUE would show its versatility on the offensive side with a mix of small ball and power. The Bengals would use a pair of bunts as part of a three run second inning to start the LSUE scoring.
The power bats would show up later in the game as
Zachary Thomas (Jesup, GA, Wayne County HS) laced a two-run triple to push the Bengals' lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. The four-run frame also saw one of two
Parker Coley (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) doubles.
After
Alexander Saunier (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette HS) made it 8-0 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to plate
Brad Griffin (Sydney, Australia, Endeavour Sports HS),
Tanner Vadnais (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) electrified the LSUE dugout with a pinch hit three-run home run in the seventh.
Thomas led the Bengals' 13-hit out put with a 3-for-3 night in his LSUE debut. Coley and
Dawson Willis (Ruston, LA, Ruston HS) also logged multi-hit games.
LSU Eunice will now conclude its season opening series with North Lake College with a Saturday doubleheader. The action from Bengal Stadium starts at 1:00PM with both games being streamed on the LSUE Digital Network.
