EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball produced a strong showing in all areas during a Saturday sweep of Delgado Community College on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (36-2) continued its longest standing rivalry with its fellow in-state power Dolphins as the two schools near their 100th all-time meeting.
The Bengals used a strong pitching effort by
Blake Lobell (Holden, LA, Springfield HS) and clutch hitting to take a 5-2 decision in the doubleheader opener, followed by an offensive explosion in a 13-3 run-rule victory.
The Bengals and Dolphins conclude the Eunice portion of their annual meetings Sunday with a 1:00PM first pitch from Bengal Stadium.
Game 1 vs. Delgado CC – W, 5-2
LSU Eunice co-captain Blake Lobell continues its surge down the stretch run as the Bengal ace guided another win in a 5-2 victory over Delgado. Lobell logged his first complete game of the season, going seven full innings.
Lobell and the Bengals found themselves in an early hole as Delgado struck for a two out, two run single in the second inning. The sophomore would settle down and limit the Dolphins to five base runners the remainder of the game as just one reached scoring position.
The righty scattered nine hits and two walks while logging 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeouts give Lobell double digit punch outs in three of his last four outings. His 10 wins and 79 strikeouts both currently lead the NJCAA.
The LSUE offense would help right away, tying the game in the bottom of the second inning as
Andrew Lee (Lafayette, LA, Ascension Episcopal HS) executed a two RBI sacrifice bunt. The Bengals take the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning, using a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly out around a Lee RBI single.
The Bengals made the most of their two hits, using six free passes to help bolster the offense.
Game 2 vs. Delgado CC – W, 13-3 (Six Innings)
The Bengals offense would shake off their slow start to explode in the day's finale, taking a 13-3 decision over Delgado in six innings. It was the Bengals' 20th mercy rule win of the season.
The Bengals raced out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first two innings using a pair of two-run doubles by
Collin Husser (Ponchatoula, LA, Ponchatoula HS) and
Weston Fulk (Ankeny, IA, Ankeny HS). Fulk enjoyed a breakout game offensively, collecting season-highs with three hits and four RBIs.
Delgado would creep back to striking distance, 6-3, with two runs in the third before the Bengals sunk the Dolphins for good. LSUE struck for four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by
Ashton Fuselier (Lake Charles, LA, Sam Houston HS) connecting on a two-run single. Doubles by Fulk and
Dawson Willis (Ruston, LA, Ruston HS) would produce the final runs of the game in the fifth and sixth innings.
Fuselier and Andrew Lee joined Fulk with multi-hit games as LSUE produced 12 hits in the game. Willis added a three RBI outing to help pace the LSUE attack.
Alec Beversdorf (Seabrook, TX, Clear Falls HS) improved to 5-1 after five innings of action. The freshman gave up three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
Parker Webb (Fayetteville, TN, Lincoln County HS) shut down Delgado in one inning of relief, striking out a pair.a
