BATON ROUGE, La. – After two fast starts to begin LCCAC play, LSU Eunice Women's Basketball relied on its defense to secure another runaway win in conference. The Bengals forced 32 turnovers against Baton Rouge CC to pave the way towards a comfortable 65-46 win on Wednesday at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center.
The win helps LSU Eunice (14-9, 3-0 LCCAC) move into sole possession of the LCCAC lead after the first of three round robin cycles. The Bengals pushed their current win streak to eight games.
LSUE endured a cold shoot performance in the first quarter, digging themselves into a double-digit deficit. Trailing 23-14 with 6:17 left in the first half, that's when the Bengals defense flipped the game. LSUE rattled off a 19-0 run that stretched more than eight minutes and lasted into the third quarter to build its own double-digit lead, 33-23.
The Bengals would hold firm the remainder of the game, limiting BRCC to 27.0% (17-for-63) from the field and just 13.6% (3-for-22) from three-point distance. The LSUE defense collected 22 steals and six blocked shots in the contest.
Trinity Thomas (Walker, LA, Walker HS) led the Bengals in the defensive department, forcing five steals and blocking one shot. She was one of three LSUE players to record eight rebounds.
The defense was key to end both halves as LSUE held Baton Rouge CC to six and seven points respectively in the second and fourth quarters.
Kamiera McDonald (Baton Rouge, LA, Scotlandville HS) and
Ray'Onna Sterling (Vacherie, LA, Walker HS) were key on the offensive end. McDonald stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 21 points while flirting with a triple-double as she recorded eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Sterling added 16 points in the victory.
