EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball got a little bit from all facets of the game – offensive, pitching and defense – in the Bengals doubleheader sweep of Angelina College on Monday at Lady Bengal Field. LSUE (25-5) improved its current win streak to 12 games, the longest under head coach Meghan Collins.
The Bengals roared out the gates on Monday, taking an 8-0 run-rule decision in the opener followed by a gritty 6-4 victory to close out the day.
Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS) led the charge in the opener with a four-hit game followed by four-plus innings of shutout relief from
Alyssa Boutte (Erath, LA, Erath HS) in the finale.
The 10th-ranked Bengals are back at home on Wednesday for a 1:00PM doubleheader against Tyler Junior College. The Apache are currently receiving votes in the most recent NJCAA Division I poll.
Game 1 vs. Angelina College – W, 8-0 (Six Innings)
Jadyn Yesso continued her recent hot streak to pace LSU Eunice to an 8-0 win over Angelina College to begin the Monday doubleheader. The freshman went 4-for-4 in the contest, collecting a trio of doubles while having a hand in four of LSUE's runs.
Yesso and the Bengals went right to work in the opening inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) produced the first run of the game on a sacrifice grounder before
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) brought home Yesso on a two-out double up the middle.
Howell drove in Yesso again in the third before a four-run fourth inning helped LSUE separate from the Roadrunners.
Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) and
Makinzey Elisar (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) were joined by Rills and Yesso with run producing base hits in the frame. Yesso induced the run-rule with her third double of the game in the sixth inning, giving her 14 doubles on the season – tied for fourth nationally in NJCAA Division II.
The heart of the LSUE lineup – Rills, Yesso and Howell – accounted for seven of the team's 11 hits, driving in six RBIs and scoring three runs.
Ava Kordish (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS) picked up the win after tossing four scoreless innings. The freshman gave up just four hits while not issuing a walk and striking out a batter.
Cate Nettles (Slidell, LA, Slidell HS) pitched two innings of one-hit relief.
Game 2 vs. Angelina College – W, 6-4
A hot offensive start and dominant pitching late paved the way for a 6-4 win over Angelina to complete the Monday sweep. The Bengals raced out to a 5-0 lead and held the Roadrunners scoreless the final four innings.
LSUE would manufacture its offense in the Monday finale, using an error and McKenna Howell sacrifice grounder to put up two runs in the opening frame. A passed ball and two more sacrifices – from
Bella Halata (Friendswood, TX, Friendswood HS) and Payton Prince – gave LSUE a 5-0 edge after two innings.
Angelina would put a scare into the home crowd, playing four runs in the third to trim the LSUE lead to 5-4. That's when Alyssa Boutte slammed the door on the Roadrunner offense. Boutte pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits and one walk. The sophomore struck out four batters retiring the Angelina offense in order her last two innings of action.
Howell added a valuable insurance run in the fifth, doubling home Kate Rills. LSUE would collect just six hits in the game including two each from Rills and
Gracie Higginbotham (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS).
