EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball proved again it can win in many ways as the Bengals swept a Friday doubleheader of Blinn College at Lady Bengal Field. LSUE (30-6) continues its four-game series with the Buccaneers with a Saturday doubleheader slated for 12:00PM.
The Bengals overcame an early two-run hole to rattle off 10 unanswered in taking a 10-2 run-rule victory in the first game of the day against Blinn. LSUE would show some toughness in the finale, plating two runs late to walk-off 4-3 in eight innings. It was the Bengals' fourth walk-off win of the season.
Game 1 vs. Blinn College – W, 10-2 (Five Innings)
A power surge helped lift LSU Eunice past Blinn College 10-2 in a five inning run-rule win to start the Friday twin bill. It was the Bengals' ninth mercy rule victory of the season.
LSUE found itself in a quick hole with Blinn striking for a two-run home run in the opening inning. The Bengals would cut into the deficit with a RBI double by
Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) in the bottom half before going ahead in the third with a four-run frame. Rills tied the game with a sacrifice grounder followed by back-to-back home runs from
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) and
Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS). Howell smashed a two-run long ball to left while Yesso lifted a solo bomb to left, making it 5-2 LSUE.
Payton Prince added a run an inning later on a bunt single to bring home
Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS). LSUE secured the run-rule with four more runs in the fifth, including the third home run of the game – a two-run drive by
Makinley Harris (Denham Springs, LA, Denham Springs HS).
Ciara Orgeron ended the game on a fly ball to right center that was misplayed, allowing two more runs to come home.
Yesso and
Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) each had multi-hit games in LSUE's 10-hit attack.
Reagan Rios (Longview, TX, Longview HS) shook off the early runs for a complete game outing to improve to 11-2 on the season. The sophomore scattered five hits while not issuing a walk, striking out five batters.
Game 2 vs. Blinn College – W, 4-3 (Eight Innings)
LSUE would turn to small ball and another complete game gem to take a 4-3 decision over Blinn to end the Friday doubleheader.
Kate Rills played the hero, executing a bunt in extra innings that would score the winning run. Blinn's pitcher tried to get the lead out going to third, allowing Rills to make it to first. The sophomore made a heads up play making her way to second forcing a throw, helping
Makinzey Elisar (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) slide safely into home.
It was Rills' second RBI of the game.
LSUE would tie the game in the sixth with a two-out double by McKenna Howell, helping pinch runner
Alyssa Lewis (Brazoria, TX, West Columbia HS) score from first. Blinn took the lead in the fifth inning, striking for a pair of runs.
The Bengals held a 2 -1 lead for much of the game as both teams scored in the opening inning. Rills and Jaydn Yesso each produced sacrifice ground outs to push ahead after Blinn struck again in the opening inning.
Ava Kordish (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS) pieced together an 8-inning complete game effort. Kordish (10-2) gave up three earned runs off eight hits while not issuing a free pass. She forced 16 flyouts and 7 ground outs in the victory.
