EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice played a pair of games that went down to the wire with Blinn College on Saturday, splitting the doubleheader at Lady Bengal Field. The Bengals (31-7) won three of the four games in the weekend series against Buccaneers.
LSUE could not conjure up its late game magic in the opening contest, falling 4-2 to start the day. The Bengals, however, would reach into that bag with two runs in the sixth inning of the finale to take a 4-3 victory to end the weekend with Blinn.
Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) was the offensive sparkplug on Saturday, collecting four hits while driving in three runs and scoring twice.
The Bengals will be back at home next Saturday, March 29 for a 2:00PM doubleheader against Baton Rouge Community College.
Game 1 vs. Blinn College – L, 2-4
A pair of late runs were too much to overcome as LSU Eunice fell in its first game of the day, 4-2, to Blinn College. All four of the Buccaneer's runs would come with two outs in the inning.
LSUE took the early upper hand with a fielder's choice from a
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) ground ball that allowed Kate Rills to score. The Bucs would answer with a two-run double in the second to take their first lead of the game.
The Bengals answered with a
Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS) RBI single up the middle to plate
Makinley Harris (Denham Springs, LA, Denham Springs HS), tying the game 2-2.
Blinn would score two go-ahead runs in the seventh before LSUE would go down with a game ending double play in the bottom half.
Rills and Harris each had a pair of hits in the game, while Erika Savage would go the distance in the circle.
Game 2 vs. Blinn College – W, 4-3
Kate Rills had a hand in three of LSUE's runs including a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth to help the Bengals take a 4-3 finale over Blinn College. Rills reached base safely in all four of her at bats, going 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run scored while walking twice.
Rills' triple help erase a one-run deficit for the Bengals, as her short fly ball to right would drop and allow two runners to score. She started the game with a solo home run to left field to give the Bengals the early lead.
Blinn would strike for three runs in the fourth inning – all of them unearned - with the Bengals answering in the bottom half of the inning on a
Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) sacrifice fly.
Alyssa Boutte (Erath, LA, Erath HS) had a tough luck no decision, going 5.2 innings. Boutte scattered seven hits while not issuing a free pass, striking out a pair of batters.
Reagan Rios (Longview, TX, Longview HS) picked up the win in relief, throwing 1.1 no-hit innings allowing one walk.
