CHALMETTE, La. – It was another classic example of the "Back Half Bengals", LSU Eunice Baseball's penchant for taking control of a game in the final three innings. LSUE did just that on Saturday night, striking for eight runs in the seventh inning to rally past Nunez CC 10-5 in the opener of their LCCAC weekend series.
The Bengals (32-1) overcame a slow start, digging themselves out of a 5-2 hole entering the critical inning. The first seven LSUE batters would reach base safely by way of three walks and four singles.
Cash Riley, III (Dallas, TX, Jesuit HS) started the scoring in the inning with a RBI single to bring home
Jordan Luna (Washington, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS).
Ashton Fuselier (Lake Charles, LA, Sam Houston HS) would score thanks to a Pelicans' balk before
Tyson LeBlanc (Maurice, LA, North Vermilion HS) tied the game on a single to plate Riley.
Jackson Legg (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) provided the go-ahead RBI on a single through the infield, while a
Will Mabry, IV (St. Joseph, LA, Tensas Academy) fielder's choice and
Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) RBI single pushed the LSUE advantage to 8-5. Fuselier would come out with the knockout blow, a two-run base hit to bring home both Mabry and Obradovich.
McCray Jacobs (Johnson City, TX, Johnson City HS) would slam the door closed, retiring the last nine Nunez batters in order. Jacobs picked up the win with 3.1 innings of relief work, giving up just one hit and striking out four batters.
Nunez has built up its lead by sprinkling runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings. LSUE's only offense in the first six frames were solo home runs by Tyson Leblanc and
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS). LeBlanc continued his recent tear, tallying his third four-hit game of the season. Ashton Fuselier added a three-hit night while Jackson Legg was the other Bengal to record a multi-hit game in LSUE's 12-hit evening.
Alec Beversdorf (Seabrook, TX, Clear Falls HS)received the no decision after hurling 5.2 innings, managing traffic throughout the night. The sophomore scattered seven hits and three walks while striking out six batters.
