EUNICE, La. – The seventh inning wasn't only for stretching for LSU Eunice, it was used for extending its lead over National Park in a 12-5 victory on Saturday. The Bengals (4-1) plated eight runs in the critical frame to distance themselves from the Nighthawks in what was a one-run contest.
Mason Bordelon (Marksville, LA, Avoyelles Charter HS) kicked off the seventh in emphatic fashion, lifting a solo home run to left center. The Bengals would then take advantage of free passes, using five walks or hit by pitches that helped score two more runs and keep the bases loaded.
Andrew Clapinski (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would then unload them with a double off the centerfield wall, bringing in three runs to push the LSUE lead to 10-3.
Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) capped the inning with a double of his own, driving in two more runs.
Clapinski and Obradovich headlined the LSUE offense. Clapinski accounted for six of the teams runs – four RBIs and two runs scored – while Obradovich tallied a team-high three hits with three RBIs.
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) was the other Bengal to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a RBI and three runs scored.
Offense was hard to come by for much of the game. LSU Eunice jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning with some of the same culprits of the seventh inning explosion having a hand in the action. Clapinski and Obradovich had RBI base hits, while Bordelon scored on a wild pitch. LSUE's other run came off a wild pitch in the second inning.
The LSUE pitching staff collected 13 strikeouts against National Park.
Lane Fenske (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) grabbed his first win as a Bengal, logging five innings of work. The freshman gave up two earned runs off two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Hunter Gambel (Hammond, LA, St. Thomas Aquinas HS),
McCray Jacobs (Johnson City, TX, Johnson City HS), and
Ian Carlson (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood HS) all saw time on the mound.
The Bengals aim for the weekend sweep with the series finale set for Sunday at 1:00PM from Bengal Stadium.
