EUNICE, La. –
Jordan Luna (Washington, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) launched a walk-off two-run home run to cap a thrilling doubleheader sweep of Baton Rouge on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (25-5) won in walk-off fashion for the second time this season.
LSU Eunice started the day with a methodical 10-2 win before Luna's home run capped a 6-4 finale. It was a stellar day for Luna, who produced four RBIs, five runs scored, and five stolen bases in the two wins.
The Bengals close out their opening weekend of LCCAC play on Sunday with a 1:00PM contest against the Bears.
Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge – W, 10-2
LSU Eunice scored in five of its six offensive opportunities on its way to a 10-2 win over Baton Rouge. The Bengals took advantage of five BRCC errors in the victory.
LSUE jumped out in front with two runs in the first inning, using an error on a Jordan Luna bunt who would later score from an
Andrew Clapinski (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) sacrifice fly. After BRCC plated a run in the second, the Bengals tacked on two more runs in the third with Clapinski and
Caleb Hastings (Lutcher, LA, Lutcher HS) bringing home runs.
The two sides scored a run in the fourth before LSUE separated from the Bears with five runs in the fifth and sixth frames. LSUE used RBI base hits by
Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) and
Jacob Froehlich (Broussard, LA, St. Thomas More HS), a fielder's choice, an
Aarren Marshall (Allen, TX, Lovejoy HS) sacrifice fly, and bases loaded walk to bring the final tally to 10-2.
Luna was the lone Bengal with a multi-hit game while he was joined by Clapinski and Froehlich with multi-RBI outings.
Lane Fenske (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) got the job done on the mound to improve to 8-0 on the season. The freshman gave up two earned runs off nine hits and two free passes while striking out five batters.
McCray Jacobs (Johnson City, TX, Johnson City HS) delivered 1.1 innings of perfect relief.
Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge – W, 6-4
Jordan Luna set off a celebration at home plate with a towering two-run home run to help LSUE walk-off Baton Rouge in a 6-4 win to close the day's action. It was Luna's second walk-off home run of his LSUE career.
The rally started thanks to a two-out single by
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) before Luna left the yard. Mouton was the only Bengal with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Bengals found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the third inning when they struck for four runs in the frame. Mouton kicked it off with a two-run single before Milan Obradovich added two more runs thanks to one of two BRCC errors. The Bears clawed back with runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game heading to the final inning of the seven-inning contest.
Mouton also grabbed the win after tossing one inning of relief in the seventh, inducing a flyout and two ground outs.
Kade LaCoste (Slidell, LA, Pope John Paul II HS) got the start, surrendering three earned runs off four hits and two walks in his five-inning outing. LaCoste struck out a season-high nine batters.
Mekai Gallien (Rosenberg, TX, Lamar Consolidated HS) also pitched an inning of relief.
