Comeback Falls Short, LSUE Drops Nunez Opener

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball suffered an 8-7 setback to Nunez CC on Friday to start its four-game series with the Pelicans at Bengal Stadium.  LSUE (28-8) fell short of a comeback, scoring two runs in the eighth inning and leaving the bases loaded.

Nunez took the early advantage with a lead off solo home run, one of three homers hit by the Pelicans.  The Bengals responded with two manufactured runs in the second inning off an executed first-and-third double steal and a bunt single by Jake Smith (Rosepine, LA, Rosepine HS).  Nunez took the lead for good with a five-run fourth inning that included a pair of homers.

The Bengals clawed back to within a run thanks to a two-run home run from Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) in the fourth inning and a fifth inning RBI single by Andrew Clapinski (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS).  Nunez had an answer with two runs in the sixth.

LSUE's rally fell short in the eighth inning, loading the bases off three straight singles to start the inning.  Jake Smith sacrificed home Marshall Louque (Lutcher, LA, Lutcher HS) and an error allowed Jaxon Landreneau (Moss Bluff, LA, Sam Houston HS) to score.  The Bengals would do go down in order in the ninth to squash the comeback attempt.

Louque and Landreneau led the LSUE offense with multi-hit games as eight of the nine starters for the Bengals registered a base hit.

Hudson Spangler (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) was saddled with the loss after tossing 4.1 innings.  McCray Jacobs (Johnson City, TX, Johnson City HS) and Kade LaCoste (Slidell, LA, Pope John Paul II HS) each saw action out of the bullpen.

LSUE and Nunez continue its LCCAC series on Saturday with a 2:00PM doubleheader.
