BATON ROUGE, La. – While the offense continued its explosive weekend, LSU Eunice Baseball received a sterling effort on the mound from
McCray Jacobs (Johnson City, TX, Johnson City HS) during the Bengals' 12-2 win over Baton Rouge on Sunday. The Bengals (36-8) wrapped up a second series sweep against the Bears during LCCAC play and at 13-3 in conference action, sit tied with Delgado for the conference league with two weekends to play.
Jacobs made his first start of the season, and only third of his LSUE career. The southpaw shook off a run allowed in the opening inning, leaving five runners stranded for the remainder of his seven-inning outing. He would retire the last eight batters in faced in order.
The 10 strikeouts are a career best for Jacobs and the third outing this season a LSUE pitcher has thrown double digit punch outs.
BRCC clung to that one run lead until the Bengals broke the game open in the middle innings.
Marshall Louque (Lutcher, LA, Lutcher HS) put LSUE on the board in the fourth with a RBI double and
Mason Bordelon (Marksville, LA, Avoyelles Charter HS) gave the Bengals the lead for good two batters later on a fielder's choice.
LSUE struck for five runs in the fifth thanks to RBI at bats from
Andrew Clapinski (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS),
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS), Louque,
Tyler Mitchell (Marrero, LA, John Curtis HS), and Bordelon.
Bordelon launched an eighth inning solo home run, the 11th straight game LSUE has had at least one home run. Andrew Clapinski added a sacrifice ground out to make it a 9-1 advantage. After BRCC scored an unearned run, LSUE brought home three more runs on a bases loaded single from
Caleb Hastings (Lutcher, LA, Lutcher HS), using a Bear error to empty the bags.
Mouton and Jordan Luna led LSUE's 16-hit output with three hits each, with Louque, Bordelon, and
Jake Smith (Rosepine, LA, Rosepine HS) also connecting for multi-hit outings.
The trio of
Mekai Gallien (Rosenberg, TX, Lamar Consolidated HS),
Xavier Woods (Cleveland, TX, Cleveland HS), and
Dayton Hicks (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) pitched the final innings of the game.
LSU Eunice returns home for its final regular season home series of the campaign this weekend. The Bengals host Delgado for a four-game set that is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 24 at 6:00PM.
