Late Surge Not Enough In Region 23 Opener

WESSON, Ms. – LSU Eunice Softball tried to claw back with the game tying runs on base but the Bengals suffer a 10-8 setback to Northwest Mississippi on Sunday in the first round of the Region 23 Tournament Wesson Bracket.  LSUE (34-16) falls into the elimination bracket and will take on Southwest Mississippi CC at 4:00PM on Monday.

The Bengals found themselves in a 10-4 hole after the Rangers jumped ahead from a tied game with a six-run fifth inning engineered by a two bases loaded RBI singles and a grand slam.  Northwest Mississippi hit three home runs in the game that totaled seven runs total.

Despite the deficit, LSU Eunice fought back, using a Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS) RBI single to left field in the bottom of the fifth to scratch a run but still leaving the bases loaded. An inning later, LSU Eunice used a two-out single by Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) and a Ranger error to cut the hole to 10-7.  The Bengals would load the bases in the inning, Prince scoring on a heads up play to steal home.  However, LSUE would get tagged out trying to steal second and end the threat.

The Bengals would leave two stranded in the final at bat.  Prince went 3-for-3 in the game, driving in two runs and scoring twice.  Mylie Elsensohn (Pearl River, LA, Pearl River HS) added a four-hit game while Makinley Harris also had a multi-hit game.

The offensive fireworks started right out of the gate.  Northwest used two home runs to put three quick runs on the board, only to be answered with four runs by the Bengals in the bottom half.  LSUE used a passed ball, Prince RBI bunt single, and Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS) RBI single to take the lead it would hold until the fourth inning.

Emily Rachal (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) was dealt the loss after tossing 4.1 innings and giving up nine earned runs.  Erika Savage (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood Park HS) gave up one earned run in 2.2 relief frames, giving up two hits and a walk.
