WEST MEMPHIS, Ar. – Over the course of LSU Eunice's six-game win streak, the Bengals have exploded out to hot starts and left opponents in the dust. In their first road game in more than a month, LSUE kept its winning ways alive thanks to a furious fourth quarter rally.
Bethany Broussard (Iowa HS) poured in 12 of her career-high 16 points in the final frame as the Bengals erased an eight-point deficit with a 32-point fourth in a 74-66 victory at Arkansas State-Mid-South. The win pushes LSUE's win streak to seven games.
LSUE struggled through an uncharacteristic first half against the Greyhounds. The Bengals have averaged 88.5 points per game during their six-game home stand but struggled to a 25-point output through one half at the Fenter Center. ASU-Mid-South held a 29-25 edge at the break.
Both teams crept out of the gate with the Greyhounds holding a 12-11 advantage after the first quarter. The Bengals got an unexpected boost from freshman
Sarah Guidry (Lake Arthur) in the second. In just her fourth game of the campaign, Guidry poured in nine of the Bengals' 14 points in the quarter to held LSUE keep within striking distance of the Greyhounds at intermission.
Guidry finished with 12 points on the night.
It wasn't until the final ten minutes of the game that LSU Eunice found its form.
Rylie James (Basile HS) and Broussard combined for 19 of the team's 32 points in the final frame and the Bengals shot a combined 12-of-15 (80.8%) from the free throw line. LSUE outscored ASU-Mid-South 32-16 to close out the contest.
James recorded her second double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Gabrielle Harrington (Erath HS) provided a clutch performance from the charity stripe. The sophomore went 7-of-8 from the line including 5-of-6 in that fourth quarter.
The Bengals held Greyhound leading scorer Sable Greer in check. After tallying 22 points in the two teams' first meeting, Greer was held to just seven points in the rematch.
LSU Eunice will now return home for a game Wednesday against Louisiana College. The Bengals and Wildcats will play a home-and-home to close out the 2017 calendar year with LSUE making a return trip to Pineville on December 29.
