Box Score MARIANNA, Florida – The LSU Eunice Bengals used balanced scoring and a strong defense to earn a 12-2 victory over Grand Rapids Community College Saturday In the Chipola College tournament.
Grand Rapids grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Brian Cappiello walked and scored on a two-out hit by Josh Robbins.
The Bengals (18-2) responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning as
Bo Myers (Zachary) singled and
Michael Claverie (Live Oak) followed with a home run.
GRCC tied the game in the second as Austin Anderson singled and scored on Cappiello's triple.
LSUE retook the lead in the bottom of the frame as
Anthony Forte (Conant) walked and scored on a Grand Rapids error.
The Bengals pushed ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the third, begun when Claverie doubled and scored on a double by
Cameron Horton (Benton HS). Horton later scored on a wild pitch as LSUE moved ahead for good.
The Bengals continued its offensive outburst with two more runs in the fourth frame, begun as
Braden Comeaux (Barbe) walked, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and then Claverie followed with his second home run of the game.
LSUE exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the mercy-rule win as Claverie was hit by a pitch and scored on a hit by Horton, while
Hunter Feduccia (Barbe) walked and scored on a single by
Austin Kirkpatrick (Teurlings Catholic).
Johnny Johnson (Runnels) reached on a fielder's choice and Jacob Richard was hit by a pitch before Comeaux's double cleared the bases to end the game.
Clay Moffitt (Catholic) picked up his first win of the season as he struck out two, walked one and allowed two earned runs on six hits over three innings.
Brian Metoyer (Natchitoches Central) threw three shout-out innings as he struck out two, walked one and scattered two hits.
Claverie went 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored, while Horton finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and run scored as the two Bengal batters with multiple hits.
