Box Score MARIANNA, Florida – In a battle between NJCAA powers, Chipola College earned a 3-0 win over LSU Eunice Sunday in the conclusion of the Bengals' four-game road trip.
LSUE (19-3,No. 2 in Div. II) was limited to just two hits in the seven-inning shutout by the Indians (18-4, No. 4 in Div. I) after the Bengals broke Chipola's 10-game win streak with a 9-2 on Saturday.
After three scoreless innings, the Indians pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third inning, aided by two Bengal errors.
Jose Caballero, Edmond Americann and Andrew Bechtold all singled to begin the inning.
Caballero scored on a LSUE error, while Americann scored when Brody Wofford reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on an infield error.
Michael Claverie (Live Oak) recorded the first Bengal hit in the top of the fourth as he moved to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded.
The Bengals threatened again in the fifth inning when
Micah McHugh (Zachary) walked and
Koi Westbrook (Carencro) singled with two outs, but again LSUE could not push a run across.
LSUE had another scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth when
Braden Comeaux (Barbe) walked and stole second but was left stranded at the corner.
Chipola added an insurance run when Raynaldo Rivera hit a solo home run to push the Indians up, 3-0.
Michael Brawner (St. Joseph HS) had a strong performance as he struck out 10, walked two and allowed an earned run over five innings, but slipped to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Josh Taylor (Teurlings Catholic) pitched one inning and allowed one earned run on one hit over the four batters he faced.
Claverie (1for-3) and Westbrook (1-for-2) rapped the only hits for the Bengals, who were shut out for the first time since Feb. 8, 2015.
LSU Eunice travels to LSU Alexandria at 6 p.m. Wednesday before beginning a hone weekend series against Murray State College.
