Box Score RANGER, Texas –LSU Eunice earned a 16-0, 5-3 doubleheader sweep Saturday at Ranger College in the Bengals' final regular season weekend.
The Bengals (44-9) and the Rangers (16-39) will complete the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Game One, LSUE 16, Ranger College 0
The Bengals exploded for seven runs in the top of the second to help LSUE grab a a 16-0, five inning mercy-rule win.
The early rally began when
Michael Claverie (Live Oak) was hit by a pitch, while
Hunter Feduccia (Barbe) and
Gabe Hannum (Zachary) walked to load the bases.
Anthony Forte (Conant) doubled to clear the bases,
Gavin Bourgeois (Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch and then
Brent Hebert (Cypress Ranch) followed with a 2 RBI single to push the Bengals up, 5-0.
Braden Comeaux (Barbe) singled in Hebert and later scored on a hit by Feduccia.
With a 7-0 advantage, the Bengals added three more runs in the third inning, begun when
Micah McHugh (Zachary) tripled and scored on a hit by
Koi Westbrook (Carencro).
Forte blasted a two-run home run to extend the Bengals' lead to 10-0.
LSUE continued its offensive barrage with four runs in the fourth inning as the Bengals loaded the bases when Claverie singled, Feduccia walked and Hannum was hit by a pitch.
McHugh singled in Claverie and Feduccia, while Hannum scored on a ground-out by Westbrook. Forte hit a sacrifice fly to plate McHugh as the Bengals pushed ahead, 14-0.
LSUE sealed the win with two more runs in the fifth, begun when
Jacob Richard (Teurlings Catholic) walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a pinch-hit double by
Bo Myers (Zachary).
Myers advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a pinch-hit double by
Joe Faulk (Notre Dame) as the Bengals surged ahead, 16-0.
Braxton Smith (Orangefield) (7-3) earned the complete game shutout win as he struck out five and allowed five hits over five innings.
The Bengals finished with 11 hits, led by Forte (2-for-2, 6 RBI), McHugh (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Hebert (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
Game Two: LSUE 5, Ranger College 3
The second game was much closer as the Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Bengals responded to earn a 5-3 win.
Trailing 2-0, the Bengals responded with two runs in the top of the third begun when Forte doubled and scored on a double by Bourgeois.
Bourgeois stole third and then scored on a balk to tie game, 2-2.
LSUE grabbed a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth as Comeaux singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Hannum singled.
The Bengals added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth, begun McHugh singled and scored on a double by Bourgeois.
Bourgeois scored on a hit by Brent Hebert as the Bengals moved ahead, 5-2.
Ranger College closed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh as Daniel Goncalves reached on an error, advanced on a balk and scored on a double by Christian Sanjurjo.
The Bengals did not allow a hit the rest of the way as the Rangers had just one base runner on a walk in the ninth but could not score.
LSUE starter
Zach Hester (Vidor) went three innings as he struck out two, walked one and allowed two earned runs on five hits.
Ridge Heisler (Mangham) improved to 8-0 on the season as he struck out six, walked one and allowed one run on one hit over 5.2 innings.
Justin Barton (Caldwell Parish) earned the save as he struck out the only batter he faced to seal the win.
The Bengals finished with eight hits, led by Bourgeois (3-for-4, 2 RBI).
