Horton Paces Bengals To Early Runs, Mercy Rule Win

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU Eunice stormed out with nine runs in the first two innings and never looked back in a run-rule 11-0 victory over Baton Rouge CC at Pete Goldsby Field.  The Bengals piled up double digit runs and hits in consecutive games for the first time since wins at Coastal Bend College on February 16 and 17.

Cameron Horton paced the 11-hit night with a 3-for-4 evening including four RBIs.

The sophomore helped the Bengals plate five runs in the first inning with a bases loaded two-run double.  Horton would score later on a sacrifice groundout by Jacob Richard which also brought home Mason Templet.  Templet led off the scoring with a bases loaded RBI-single.

Horton and Templet each drove in another run an inning later.  Chance Clark provided a RBI single and would later score on a balk to cap off a four-run second inning.

That was more than enough for Josh Taylor in his first start of the season.  The sophomore scattered four hits while striking out a pair of batters.  The trio of Brian Fairbanks, Jacob Spell and Austin Bradford came in relief to allow just two hits over the final three innings.

Micheal Russell was tagged with the loss after lasting an inning, giving up seven runs off five hits and a walk.

In addition to LSUE's hit attack, the Bengals ran wild on the base paths to collect nine stolen bases on the night.  Chance Clark, Mason Templet, Andrew Sheridan and Evan Keller all swiped a pair of bags while Jacob Richard helped the Bengals reach 100 stolen bases on the season.

Horton added another RBI in the fourth inning while Brent Hebert capped off the night with a run scoring single in the seventh inning.

LSU Eunice returns home tomorrow for its first home mid-week game of the season.  The Bengals welcome Bossier Parish CC to town for a 6:00PM start.  Fans can also follow the baseball team's Twitter (@LSUEBengalsBSB), Facebook (@LSUEuniceBaseball) and Instagram (@LSUEBengals) accounts.
