BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU Eunice used a pair of late-inning home runs to help distance itself in a 10-2 road win at Baton Rouge CC. The top-ranked Bengals outscored the Bears 9-1 over the final five innings.
LSUE (38-4) was stuck in a 1-1 battle through four innings as Bengals' starter Dane Dixon and BRCC pitcher Micheal Smith matched each other to start. Dixon (3-1) scattered one earned run off four hits while striking out six batters in the win.
The Bengals were first on the board in the second inning as Johnny Johnson singled home Cameron Horton. BRCC answered in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run by Garrett Barrilleaux.
LSU Eunice took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Chance Clark's single and Brent Hebert's double but them both in scoring position. Mason Templet lifted a sacrifice fly to score Clark, while Andrew Sheridan followed up with a run scoring double to make it a 3-1 LSUE advantage.
The Bengals broke through for a four-run sixth an inning later thanks to a run scoring single by Evan Keller that was followed by a two-run Johnny Johnson home run, his third of the season. Andrew Sheridan pushed the lead to 7-1 with a RBI-single.
Keller joined Brent Hebert to lead the team in hits with three a piece, while Johnson drove in a team-high three runs on a 2-for-4 evening. Five Bengals recorded a multi-hit game with Chance Clark and Andrew Sheridan joining the pack.
Hayden Mixon continued the barrage with a lead-off home run to start the seventh, his first with the Bengals. Chance Clark and Tristan Welch closed the scoring for LSUE with a pair of run scoring singles in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
The Bengals used five relievers with Jacob Spell, Austin Bradford and Landon Clifton each seeing an inning of work. Justin Barton and Brent Hebert split duties in the eighth inning. The pitchers combined to give up one run off two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters.
LSU Eunice will continue on the road for a four-game swing in Texas. The Bengals will head back up to Tyler to face UT-Tyler in a three game set beginning Wednesday. After a single game that night starting at 7:00PM, the two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 3:00PM. LSUE also makes a return trip to Wharton County on Monday, April 23.
