TYLER, Tx. - LSU Eunice used a pair of big innings to secure a series sweep of Tyler Junior College in Sunday's doubleheader. The Bengals offense continued to sparkle, racking up 20 runs and 22 hits in 16 innings of play.
LSUE (34-4) won 12-5 in the twinbill opener after a five-run fourth helped spark the victory, and followed that up with a seven-run frame in an 8-4 finale win.
The Bengals continue a four-game road swing with a date at LSU Alexandria on Wednesday. LSUE defeated LSUA 15-4 in Eunice on March 28. First pitch from Alexandria is scheduled for 6:00PM.
GAME ONE
The top of the LSU Eunice lineup accounted for seven hits and and 11 RBIs as the Bengals roared past Tyler JC 12-5 in a seven inning affair.
The top four hitters in the Bengals' batting order paced a 14-hit outburst including 3 RBIs each from Chance Clark, Brent Hebert and Mason Templet. Hebert and Templet helped LSUE crawl out of an early 2-0 hole with back-to-back doubles that pushed LSUE ahead 3-2 in the third inning, a lead LSUE would never lose.
LSU Eunice's lead swelled to 8-2 in the fourth after a five-hit, five-run frame capped off by a two-run single by Mason Templet. The Apaches responded with three runs in the fourth that helped chase Bengal starter Andrew Sheridan.
The freshman received a no-decision after throwing 3.1 innings, allowing five runs off three hits and three walks while striking out four batters. Jacob Spell (3-0) picked up the win after 3.2 scoreless frames.
The Bengals answered right back with two runs in the fifth and closed out the game in the seventh with another pair of runs.
Koi Westbrook and Evan Keller both enjoyed three-hit games and combining for seven runs scored.
GAME TWO
LSU Eunice used a seven-run third inning to build an eight-run lead to pace the Bengals to an 8-4 finale win over Tyler JC. LSUE used a team approach to the victory with 18 players getting action.
Hayden Mixon and Koi Westbrook started the big third frame with consecutive singles. Andrew Sheridan loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch and two runs would score thanks to consecutive walks issued to Mason Templet and Slate Fuller. Tristan Welch pushed the Bengals' lead to 4-0 with a two-run single and was followed by a two-run double by Jacob Richard. Mixon would end the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly in his second at-bat of the frame.
The Bengals added another run an inning later after Brent Hebert stole home after reaching earlier in the inning off a one-out single.
Slate Fuller led the LSUE offense with a two-hit game, scoring a run.
LSUE starter Josh Taylor threw three scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two batters. Gage Trahan (2-0) was credited with the win after striking out two batters in 1.1 innings of work. The Bengals unloaded bullpen, putting five relievers in action.
Tyler JC scored four late runs with a pair of scores in the seventh and eighth inning before the duo of Brian Fairbanks and Brent Hebert helped shutdown any Apache comeback bid.
