Bengals Draw Mississippi Gulf Coast In Region 23 Opener

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice returns to postseason play for the second straight season as the Bengals open up the Region 23 Tournament against Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday, March 5 at 3:00PM.  The tournament is being held at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College in Cliton, Mississippi.
 
The eight-team single elimination tournament begins Tuesday, March 5 and runs through Friday, March 8.  The winner will receive an automatic berth into the NJCAA Division I National Tournament on March 18-23 at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
 
This will be LSU Eunice's second straight appearance in the Region 23 Tournament and fifth overall.  The Bengals are 7-12 all-time in NJCAA postseason play with their last victory coming in the 2008 District Tournament, defeating Johnson County CC 83-78.
 
LSU Eunice (18-3) enters the postseason on a school record tying 16-game win streak.  The Bengals recently capped off their second straight undefeated conference championship, defeating Delgado CC 101-62 on Wednesday, February 27.
 
The Bengals are ranked sixth nationally in points, averaging 90.0 points per game.  Sissy Saucier (Ragley, LA, South Beauregard HS) leads the LSUE offense with 13.7 points with Claralee Richard (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) chipping 10.3 points per game.
 
Mississippi Gulf Coast CC comes into the week off a semifinal appearance in the MACJC State Tournament.  The Bulldogs went 14-9 in the regular season, including a 9-5 finish in the MACJC South Division.  MGCCC is led by freshman Kayla Simmons, averaging 12.3 points per contest.
 
Despite not playing each other this season, the two sides are no strangers having met the previous seven seasons.  LSUE won both games in the 2017-18 season, but Mississippi Gulf Coast leads the all-time series 19-13.
