EUNICE, La. -LSU Eunice Baseball responded in emphatic fashion to its first setback of the season with a 17-6 mercy rule win over Monroe College on Sunday to close out its series with the Mustangs. The Bengals (9-1) used 13 unanswered runs in their highest output of the season.
The Bengals saw themselves fall into an early hole as Monroe's Salix Felix knocked his second home run of the weekend, a solo homer, to give the Mustangs what would be their only lead of the game. LSUE responded in the bottom half of the inning after
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) tied the game with a sacrifice grounder.
The bats would explode over the next two innings. LSUE quickly loaded the bases with
Reed Eason (West Monroe, LA, West Monroe HS),
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) and
Kole Myers (Jennings, LA, Jennings HS) bringing home runs in three consecutive at bats. The Bengals would stretch their lead to 8-1 in the third headlined by one of three Carter Quinn sacrifice flies. Quinn led the Bengals with a four RBI afternoon after moving to the lead-off spot in the batting lineup.
The run-rule was put into play in the fifth inning after another four-run inning, capped off by LeJeune's two-run home run to make it 13-1 Bengals. Monroe would show signs of life an inning later, capitalizing on two LSUE errors and four free passes.
LSUE answered with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning after
Michael Fontenot (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS) jumpstarted the inning with a towering solo home run to left field.
The Bengals tied a season-high for hits with 12 for the afternoon as four different Bengals – Kole Myers, Peyton LeJeune,
Darian Richard (Rayne, LA, Rayne HS) and Reed Eason – grabbed multi-hit games.
Aiden Vosburg (Jarreau, LA, Catholic-Pointe Coupee HS) turned in a solid performance during his first collegiate start. The freshman hurled three innings, giving up one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts. The Bengal pitching staff struck out a dozen batters, led by
Brock Barthelemy's (Gonzales, LA, Dutchtown HS) four punchouts over 1.2 innings worked.
LSUE returns home this weekend for a four-game series against Kellogg CC. The action from Bengal Stadium starts on Friday at 6:00PM and can be seen on the LSUE Digital Network presented by Opelousas General Health.
