EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice baseball suffered its first loss of the season during a Saturday split with Monroe College at Bengal Stadium.
The Bengals saw extreme highs and lows in the doubleheader with the Mustangs.
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS) and
Luke McGibboney (Gonzales, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) combined for a seven-inning no-hitter in Game 1, followed by a 6-4 loss that saw LSUE not capitalize on several offensive opportunities.
LSUE will aim to bounce back on Sunday as the four-game series concludes with a 2:00PM game at Bengal Stadium.
Game One vs. Monroe College – W, 8-0
The pitching duo of Patrick Vienne and Luke McGibboney turned in a solid performance, delivering LSUE an 8-0 victory in no-hit fashion.
It was the first no-hitter for the Bengals since LSUE turned in back-to-back no-hitters vs. Kellogg CC on February 29, 2020.
Vienne and McGibboney both struck out three batters a piece as Vienne improved to 3-0 on the season after tossing five innings. The freshman navigated a walk and three hit batters to preserve the shutout as well.
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) gave LSUE all the offense it would need in the second inning. Quinn tripled home a pair of runs and would score on a passed ball. The sophomore would score three runs in the game.
Korey Cooper (Dickinson, TX, Dickinson HS) provided the big hit in the fourth with a towering two-run home run to push LSUE's lead to 5-0. The Bengals would manufacture three more runs around a pair of wild pitches and a walk.
Game Two vs. Monroe College – L, 4-6
LSUE fell for the first time in 2022 as Monroe College knocked a pair of big home runs in a 6-4 victory over the Bengals. LSU Eunice had its chances at the plate throughout the game but could not convert on several run scoring opportunities, leaving seven runners in scoring position.
The Bengals would strike first, using four walks to score a run in the opening innings. LSUE could not manage a hit, however, and left the bases loaded. The two sides would swap a pair of manufactured runs each, giving LSUE a 3-2 lead going into the third inning.
That's when the Monroe power bats would show up, belting a pair of long balls to give the Mustangs a 5-3 advantage. LSUE would have a golden chance in the seventh with runners at second and third with no outs but would come up empty.
A wild pitch in the ninth pushed Monroe's lead to 6-3 before
Cade Hart's (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) solo home run in the bottom of the inning ended the scoring for the day.
LSUE would outhit Monroe, 7-5, thanks to multi-hit games from
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) and Carter Quinn.
