EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice received a pair of solid efforts on the mound to hep the Bengals take down Baton Rouge CC in a Sunday doubleheader at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (22-5) gave up just two earned runs to the Bears over the two contests.
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS) improved to 8-0 on the season in a complete game effort during LSUE's 4-1 win to open the day, followed by a collaborative effort holding the Bears to just four hits in a 7-2 victory to claim the twinbill sweep.
LSUE its series with Baton Rouge CC next weekend with a three-game set. The Bengals travel to the Capital City on Friday for a 6:00PM with the two sides traveling back to the Cajun Prairie on Saturday, March 26 for a 6:00PM game.
Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 4-1
Patrick Vienne threw his first complete game of the season as the freshmen held Baton Rouge CC at bay to deliver LSU Eunice a 4-1 victory. Vienne continued his fantastic start to the 2022 season, picking up his eighth win of the season.
That win total is tied for the NJCAA lead, regardless of division.
Baton Rouge CC got to the Bengals early, doubling home a run to take a 1-0 advantage. LSUE answered in the third inning, using a
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) sacrifice ground out and one of
Parker Coley's (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) two RBIs on the game to take the lead.
Vienne would work in traffic in the fourth, leaving a pair stranded. For the game, Vienne would give up seven hits with no walks while striking out six batters.
LSUE would get insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, ending with
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Coley led LSUE with a 2-for-3 outing, driving in two runs.
Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 7-2
LSU Eunice plated seven runs in his final two at bats as the Bengals defeated Baton Rouge CC 7-2 to grab a Sunday doubleheader against the Bears.
The Bengals could not find an answer offensively for the first six innings of the game, grabbing just one hit off BRCC.
Brendan Moody (Iowa, LA, Iowa HS) turned in another excellent outing on the mound to help keep LSUE at arm's reach. The right-hander shook off a rocky first inning, hitting a batter with the bases loaded to let in BRCC's first run of the game.
After the first inning, Moody silenced the Bears going 6.2 innings giving up that one earned run off three hits and four walks. Moody also struck out five batters on the evening.
The game took a turn towards offense in the seventh, as
Michael Fontenot (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS) drove a two-out pitch over the right fielder's head, tripling home two runs to give LSUE a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short lived, as Baton Rouge would tie the game in the eighth.
That set the stage for a big Bengal frame as LSUE would plate five runs off three hits, a walk, two hit by pitches, an error and two balks.
Cole Romero (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) provided the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly, followed by Peyton LeJeune singling home
Bryce LaRocca (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS). Fontenot capped the inning with a RBI single.
Fontenot led the LSUE offense with a 2-for-4 game, driving in three runs.
Parker Coley (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) was the other Bengal to notch a multi-hit game.
Brock Barthelemy (Gonzales, LA, Dutchtown HS) threw the ninth inning, sandwiching two strikeouts in between a walk to give LSUE the win.
Luke McGibboney (Gonzales, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) was credited with the win after getting the final out of the eighth before the Bengals took the lead for good.
