NEW ORLEANS, La. – As is typically the case, LSU Eunice and Delgado CC went down to the wire in each of their doubleheader contests Saturday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
LSU Eunice saw a lead slip as the Bengals dropped Game One in extra innings, 6-5. The Bengals would rally for a 4-3 win in the finale.
The Bengals and Dolphins will conclude their series Sunday with a rubber match set for 1:00PM.
Game 1 vs. Delgado CC – L, 5-6
A five-run frame was not enough as LSUE saw its lead slip as the Dolphin won 6-5 in eight innings. The first game of the doubleheader was scheduled for seven innings.
After a slow start offensively, LSUE struck for five runs in the fourth inning, recording five of the team's seven hits in the frame. After
Grant Mangrum (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) started the scoring with a RBI single, LSUE would score on three consecutive at bats from
Brandon Mooney (Madisonville, LA, Mandeville HS),
Reed Eason (West Monroe, LA, West Monroe HS) and
Parker Coley (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) to give the Bengals a 5-1 advantage.
Cole Romero (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) and Mangrum led LSUE with two hits each.
Delgado would claw back with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before the walk-off in the eight.
Brock Barthelemy (Gonzales, LA, Dutchtown HS) was saddled with the loss after giving up the one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched. He scattered four hits while striking out a pair.
Game 2 vs. Delgado CC – W, 4-3
LSU Eunice withstood a late charge and left the bases loaded for Delgado in the ninth as the Bengals escaped with a 4-3 victory to earn a split.
Cade Hart (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) came in with two outs in the final frame to induce a fly out to pick up the save for the Bengals. It was the third inning of the game that the Dolphins would leave the bases loaded.
The Bengals broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth as
Aiden Vosburg (Jarreau, LA, Catholic-Pointe Coupee HS) singled home
Kole Myers (Jennings, LA, Jennings HS) for the go ahead run.
Bryce LaRocca (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) produced a valuable insurance run an inning later, sacrificing home Reed Eason.
Delgado would creep to within a run in the seventh on an RBI double.
Kole Myers gave LSUE an early 2-1 lead in the second inning, knocking his fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot. He was the lone Bengal to have a multi-hit game in LSUE's six-hit output.
Patrick Vienne (Natchitoches, LA, St. Mary's HS) got back on track to improve to 9-0 on the season. After a pair of no decisions, Vienne struck out nine Delgado batters in six innings of work. The freshman scattered two earned runs off seven hits and two walks.
