BENGALS DROP PAIR IN OPENING WEEKEND AT BEEVILLE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – NOVEMBER 4, 2023
BEEVILLE, Texas – LSU Eunice Women's Basketball dropped a pair of games as the Bengals opened up the regular season at Coastal Bend College this weekend. The Bengals (0-2) open their first season under the direction of head coach Jahmel Samuels.
LSUE took Coastal Bend to the limit, falling 72-69 on Friday before to Howard College 82-34.
Dayla Simon (Longville, LA, South Beauregard HS) led the offensive charge over the weekend scoring 11 and 13 points, respectively.
The Bengals are at home for a quick two-game homestand before hitting the road for 10 straight games. LSUE welcomes Jones College to the Cajun Prairie on Monday at 6:30PM for Family Night and their "Pink Out" game.
Friday, November 3 vs. Coastal Bend College – L, 69-72
LSU Eunice clawed back late but could not withstand a late Coastal Bend charge as the Bengals fell 72-69 to open the season.
The Bengals raced out to a fast start, outscoring the Cougars 21-6 in the first quarter.
Mary Leday (Opelousas, LA, Northwest HS) was the hot hand off the opening top, scoring seven of her 13 points in the frame.
It would be a back-and-forth affair for most of the night until Coastal opened a 61-54 lead with under six minutes left.
Destiny Brown (Hattiesburg, MS, East Marion HS) started the comeback as she bucketed five quick points, part of her 13-point game.
Tierra Sylvas (Pearl River, LA, Northshore HS) would help LSUE take the lead twice in the final 2:30, her jump shot with 50 seconds left making it a 69-68 LSUE advantage.
The Cougars would get a basket and foul opportunity on their next possession and LSUE could not convert on the offensive end.
Carson Dean (Baton Rouge, LA, East Iberville HS) was the leading scorer for the Bengals with 16 points off the bench, including four of the team's eight three-point baskets. LSUE had four different players in double figure points.
Saturday, November 4 vs. Howard College – L, 34-82
A fast start was too much to overcome as LSU Eunice fell 82-34 to Howard College to close out the Bengals' stay at Coastal Bend over the weekend. Howard pushed out to a quick 28-6 first quarter advantage as the big lead was too much for LSUE to overcome.
Dayla Simon was a bright spot for the Bengals, scoring 13 points in the setback. Mary Leday would chip in seven points.
It was the first ever meeting between LSU Eunice and Howard College.
