CARTHAGE, Texas – In just more than two decades time, LSU Eunice Baseball has established itself as not only one of the premier junior college baseball programs in the nation, but one of the winningest college baseball teams regardless of affiliation. The Bengals have seen more than their fair share of historic performances and wins along the way.
Today, another chapter in LSUE's illustrious history was written.
The Bengals pushed past Panola College 6-1 on Sunday at Jim Reeves Memorial Stadium to grab their 34th win to start the season and land the best start to a season in LSUE history. The Bengals (34-0) bested the 2016 team's mark.
LSUE's 34-game win streak to start the season is also second in school history. The Bengals will have an opportunity to break the record set by the 2020 and 2021 teams combined starts to the year tomorrow at Centenary College.
It would not come easily against a pesky Panola club.
Nick Duplechain (Lafayette, LA, Iota HS) began the scoring for LSUE with a two-out two run single that would score
Parker Coley (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) and
Alexander Saunier (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette HS). The Ponies punched back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
That's when the Bengals stood tall as the LSUE pitching staff would give up just two more hits the remainder of the game. LSUE its bullpen from start to finish.
Aiden Vosburg (Jarreau, LA, Catholic-Pointe Coupee HS) threw the first four innings in a no decision before giving way to
Blake Lobell (Holden, LA, Springfield HS),
Liam Watt (Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Nelson HS) and
Jacob Moore (Lacombe, LA, Lakeshore HS).
Josh Gregoire (Baton Rouge, LA, Episcopal HS) picked up eighth save of the season, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to secure the final two outs of the game.
LSUE bumped its lead in the sixth as
Korey Cooper (Dickinson, TX, Dickinson HS) and Duplechain connected on back-to-back RBI doubles.
Evan Joubert (Lake Charles, LA, St. Louis Catholic HS) ended the scoring an inning later with a two-run home run, his second long ball of the weekend.
Duplechain was joined by Joubert and
Zachary Thomas (Jesup, GA, Wayne County HS) with multi-hit games.
