No. 4 Bengals Take Down No. 11 Coastal With Late Winner

BROUSSARD, La. – No. 4 LSU Eunice used a late goal to take down No. 11 Coastal Bend College 2-1 on Friday at St. Julien Park.  The game was moved to Broussard to play on a turf surface following the heavy rains throughout the week in the Acadiana area.

It was the Bengals' (4-0-1) second win over a ranked opponent this early season.

The Bengals secured the win with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.  Jade Baartman (Cape Town, South Africa, Groote Schuur HS) swung in the Bengals' fifth corner kick of the game right in the middle of the box.  After a punch out attempt by the Coastal Bend goal keeper, Euwin Stevens (Cape Town, South Africa, Kasselsvlei Senior Secondary) alertly backed out of the scrum to collect the loose ball near the penalty kick marker and buried the game winner in the back of the net.

It was the second game winner of the season for Stevens as the centerback scored his team's best third goal of the season.

The Bengals were clicking on all cylinders early.  Using a hard press, LSUE dominated control of the game from the opening whistle, nearly converting on a goal in the first few minutes.  After a great sideline run by Jose Escobar (Fort Pierce, FL, Fort Pierce Central HS) to get inside the box, Baartman nearly deflected a cross into net and then Quinn Farrell (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Habersham Central HS) was denied the put back attempt as well.

LSU Eunice would be rewarded for its tenacious defensive effort in the 20th minute.  After causing a turnover, Heitor de Oliveria Moreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil, Integral Escolas Inteligentes) drew a foul just outside the box to set up a free kick.  On the set piece, the ball popped right to Moreira less than six feet from the goal as the sophomore slammed home the go-ahead goal.

LSUE would fire five shots on frame in the first half on six attempts.

After half, Coastal Bend would come to life, connecting on an equalizer in the 69th minute.

LSUE would have chances to respond after the game tying goal.  The Bengals would have a few counter attack opportunities but could not connect on the game winner before Stevens delivered the dramatic goal.

Vinicius Cadengue (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Instituto Federal de Brasilia) went the distance in goal for the Bengals, collecting four saves.

The Bengals will have a week off before returning to action, beginning a four game road swing on April 16 at Blinn College.
