Big Bats Pave Way For Monday Sweep of Angelina

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball used an offensive barrage to take a Monday doubleheader against Angelina College at Lady Bengal Field.  The Bengals (9-3) collected 19 runs and 22 hits over 12 innings of action.

The Bengals struck for a seven run frame to help lead the way to a 10-4 opener over the Road Runners, followed by a 9-1 mercy rule victory in five innings.  Maddie Chretien (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) led the Bengals with four hits over the two games, while Madison Prejean (Lafayette, LA, St. Thomas More HS) and Katie Salling (Opelousas, LA, Parkview Baptist HS) each hit a home run and combined for 10 RBIs.

LSUE stays at home for another doubleheader before hitting the road for a pair of weekend tournaments the next two weeks.  The Bengals host Lamar State College on Wednesday starting at 2:00PM.

Game 1 vs. Angelina College – W, 10-4
LSU Eunice exploded for a seven-run third inning and never looked back, winning its opening game with Angelina College 10-4.

The Bengals found themselves in a 1-0 hole after a two-out first inning error allowed Angelina to score.

LSUE would see its offense wake up in a big way during the third inning.  The Bengals saw their first five batters reach base safely as Madison Prejean ended that run with a two-run double to give LSUE the 3-1 lead.  After a fielder's choice made it 4-1, Maddie Chretien and Sina Ballew (Pineville, LA, Buckeye HS) strung back-to-back doubles to cap off the seven-run inning.

After Angelina would creep back to within three runs, Prejean would end all doubt with a no doubt three-run home run to straight away center.

Prejean produced single-game career marks in both hits (3) and RBIs (5) in the game.  She was joined by Abby Touchet (Shreveport, LA, C.E. Byrd HS) and Chretien with multi-hit games in LSUE's 13-hit output.

Chloe Bennett (Rosepine, LA, Rosepine HS) improved to 8-0 on the season with another complete game effort.  The sophomore scattered four runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk.  She added to her nation's best strikeout total with nine punch outs.

Game 2 vs. Angelina College – W, 9-1
The Bengals put together one of their best well rounded efforts of the early season with a 9-1 victory over Angelina College.  LSUE scored in every offensive at bat, Emma Shepherd (Athens, LA, Claiborne Academy) tossed her first complete game of the season and the defense was spotless without an error.

The Road Runners scored the first run of the game off a two-out solo home run but from that point it was all Bengals.  Madison Prejean tied the game up on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning, followed by a Maci Baldwin (Moss Bluff, LA, Sam Houston HS) RBI double.

LSUE would made it 3-1 on one of three Angelina errors in the second, followed by a two RBI double by Katie Salling and a RBI single from Maddie Chretien in the third.

Salling added an exclamation point on the night with a towering two-run blast to induce the mercy rule.  The freshman leads the team with four home runs on the campaign, tied for third in the nation.

Emma Shepherd would sit down Angelina in order to end the game in the fifth, marking 10 consecutive batters to be retired to close out the complete game.  Shepherd yielded the one earned run off three hits and a walk while striking out four batters.
