EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball received another sterling effort on the mound as the Bengals took down National Park College 5-0 on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. The clean sheet was the Bengals' (5-0) third shut out of the early season.
The LSUE trio of
Connor Benge (Montgomery, TX, Montgomery HS),
Owen Schexnaydre (Houma, LA, Vandebilt Catholic HS) and
Josh Gregoire (Baton Rouge, LA, Episcopal HS) combined for 16 strikeouts while giving up just three hits and three walks. Benge surrendered a lead off single to begin the game then slammed the door on the Nighthawks. The freshman struck out nine batters in four innings of work while issuing two walks.
Benge would pass the baton to fellow freshman Owen Schexnaydre who went four innings of shutout relief, striking out six batters with two hits given up and a walk. Josh Gregoire finished the dominant effort by retiring the National Park side in order in the ninth.
LSUE would manufacture a few runs which would end up being all the Bengals needed. The Bengals scored in the first off of one of three NPC errors followed by two bases loaded walks in the fifth.
Zachary Thomas (Jesup, GA, Wayne County HS) and
Alexander Saunier (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette HS) would each drive home runs in the eighth for insurance runs.
Thomas was the lone Bengals to record a multi-hit game in the eight hit output.
