EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball was able to end their six game homestand on a high note, as the Bengals capped off their Saturday action against Tyler JC with a 7-5 victory. LSUE (20-8) split the doubleheader with the Apaches.
It was a tough luck loss for LSUE to open the day, holding TJC to just two hits but they would prove costly in a 3-1 setback. The Bengals rallied behind a fast start to help take a 7-5 win in Game 2.
LSUE hits the road for a return date at Angelina College on Wednesday before returning to the Cajun Prairie on Saturday for an afternoon doubleheader against San Jacinto College.
Game 1 vs. Tyler JC – L, 1-3
It only took two hits to take down LSU Eunice as the Bengals fell in a heartbreaker to Tyler JC 3-1.
Both hits would come in the sixth inning as TJC would get a single to start the inning and squash
Chloe Bennett's (Rosepine, LA, Rosepine HS) bid for a perfect game. Three batters later with a 1-2 count and two out, the Apaches would knock a three-run home run to take a 3-1 advantage.
Bennett would get tagged with a hard luck loss, striking out nine batters in a complete game effort. She would scatter three walks and two hits.
LSUE was first to score in the fifth, as
Mari Baldwin (Moss Bluff, LA, Sam Houston HS) would single, work her way around the base paths and come home on a wild pitch. Baldwin was a bright spot offensively, collected three of the team's six hits.
The Bengals would have an opportunity to get back into the game in the bottom of the sixth, getting their first two batters on safely. TJC would answer, however, as the Apaches would strikeout three straight batters to squash the threat.
Game 2 vs. Tyler JC – W, 7-5
LSUE would answer from the earlier loss in a big way, scoring five quick runs to propel the Bengals to a 7-5 win to close the day. The win put an end to a three game skid for the Bengals.
Abby Touchet (Shreveport, LA, C.E. Byrd HS) and
Maci Baldwin (Moss Bluff, LA, Sam Houston HS) connected on RBI singles in the first inning put the Bengals up 2-0. Mari Baldwin continued her recent tear in the second inning, singling home a pair of runs before
Madison Prejean's (Lafayette, LA, St. Thomas More HS) sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 LSU Eunice.
A pair of Tyler JC home runs would inch the Apaches to 5-3 until Prejean came up with another big hit, lacing a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Those runs would prove instrumental, as TJC would slam their third home run of the game in the seventh.
Chloe Bennett would come on to induce a fly out for the final out of the game, picking up her second save of the year.
Emma Shepherd (Athens, LA, Claiborne Academy) grabbed the win after tossing four innings, giving up three earned runs of four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Baldwin, Prejean and
Maddie Chretien (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) led the LSUE attack with multi-hit games.
