Box Score MOUNT PLEASANT, TX – LSU Eunice had five different players score as the Bengals rallied from an early deficit to cruise past Northeast Texas CC. The win was LSUE's (4-0-1) fourth straight victory under Ian McGimsey, formerly the head coach at NTCC.
"It was certainly a flood of emotions of coming to a place where I spent my early coaching career," McGimsey said. "The girls did not let that distract them and really came on strong with a solid result."
Northeast Texas was first to strike when Jennifer Paz sent a long volley in for a 22nd minute goal. It was the first goal surrendered by the Bengals in 340 minutes.
Jolie Cary (Lafayette, LA, Acadiana HS) would go on to nab two saves on the day.
The Bengals' outside speed would help LSUE take the lead for good in the back portion of the first half.
Riley Miller (Lafayette, LA, Acadiana HS) was first on the board for LSU Eunice after taking a
Leslie Bennett (Kilgore, TX, Kilgore HS) through ball and burying it in the back corner with a rocket from just outside the box on the left wing. The 29th minute connection was Miller's first of the regular season.
Kelsi Humbird (Houston, TX, Angleton HS) would net the de facto game winner in the 38th minute after linking up with
Katelyn Knowles (Lufkin, TX, Lufkin HS) to give LSUE the 2-1 advantage.
"We were down a few girls due to injury but really showed off some of the depth today," McGimsey added. "I've been very pleased with our development during this win streak as we've really shown some growth in the last couple of weeks."
LSUE did not waste time after intermission as
Sherice Clarke's (Kingston, Jamaica, Wolmer's HS) laser from outside of the box gave the Bengals a two-goal lead just six minutes into the second half.
Celeste Nunez (Longview, TX, Longview HS) and Katelyn Knowles added the two final tallies in the closing minutes of the game with long volleys.
Knowles would pace the Bengals' attack with one goal and two assists. Leslie Bennett would also contribute a pair of assists in the win.
LSU Eunice will take a week off before head back out on the road to face East Central CC. The Region 23 showdown is set for a 2:00PM kick-off on Tuesday, September 25.
